Using Mobiles Abroad

Originally from the UK, I now travel between various countries in SE Asia. I have recently bought a 2 SIM Mobile Phone and use a local SIM and a Vodafone SIM from the UK. My contract with Vodafone is now finished and I have decided to move to a Pay as you Go SIM. I want a PAYG SIM which does not charge me for receiving SMS whilst abroad, allows me to retain my UK mobile number, and is not going to cost me fortunes when I return to the UK. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

All UK carriers or GSM carriers in most of the world do not charge to receive sms regardless of where you are.

I thought that. However I read that Vodafone on a PAYG charge for receiving. I have been trying to get through to their customer services to confirm but it is a bit of a nightmare from abroad.
Thanks for your help. I think I will look for a sim from anyone other than Vodafone when I get back

Just got off the phone with Vodafone customer Services. They state that they charge for receipt of SMS whilst abroad. Caroline from Vodafone stated that it is the same cost for sending as receiving. Which is a bit of a joke!

That's completely false. Some of those folks are not well informed. I am 100% sure no UK network charges for receipt of sms.

I will ring them again. I am out of contract and I think she wanted to sign me up to another one, by discouraging me to go over to PAYG. She offered me a £10 per month contract which would include 75 mins per month to call from anywhere in the world. Plus 100mins and 100 texts within the UK, these last 2 are of no use to me. However when I have tried to find this deal I can't. So maybe everything she said was rubbish!
