Freeview Reception

My area is being phased out this month for terrestrial TV. BBC 2 went on the 6th May, the other channels go on 20th May.

I have SKY, but in my room, will need to upgrade to Freeview. I have the box and an indoor aerial. I can get the BBC channels on freeeview now, which is an improvement on before BBC2 was switched off, but not the others.

Shall I wait until 20th May until I buy a digital aerial and wait to see if the current one is okay? Will they boost the signal to the other freeview channels then?

Thanks.

I wouldnt call a move to Freeview an upgrade. It isnt free for nothing.

Well, from terrestrial to freeview it's an upgrade. Having only had 4 channels in my room, i'm now going to get a few more, hopefully.

    The SKY is downstairs only.
  • I have heard that the signal from digital transmitters will be increased when the old analogue transmitters are turned off. So why not wait and see? Its only a week away.

You're right. I was thinking 2 weeks, but it's less than one now.

Hopefully the signals will be increased. Will save a few £.

There is no such thing as a " Digital Aerial " so yes wait and see is what I would do.

Okay, the switchover has happened. Stockland Hill (Devon, Somerset, Dorset)

Can get more channels now with a strong picture, but it keeps flitting in and out of program to no signal.

The fact I can get a picture at times, must be a good sign?

Is it now safe to go out and buy a better aerial and what should I be looking for?

    Thanks

Which channels? There is a power restriction on the new commercial multiplex channels to 12.5kW till 2012 at Stockland Hill whereas the PSB multiplexes (BBC, ITV, 5 etc) are now at 50kW from Stockland Hill, ten times more powerful than yesterday. You may not be able to get all Freeview channels till 2012: depends on how good your aerial system is!

    I now have a result!

Aerial up on top the wardrobe that has been cleared.

At least 75% of the signal bar on all channels, Channel 5 100%!

The only 3 channels from the freeview list I cannot get, are Dave, Sky Sports News and Sky News - all on Mux C, whatever that means?

Can get Dave ja vu though, as it's on a different mux :o

I don't have to pester flatmate now. She can watch her programs tonight and I can go upstairs and watch UEFA Cup on ITV 4!

    Result!

Watched first half and the signal interupts every few minutes for a couple of seconds, then continues as normal.

Would an amplified aerial be better, or if anyone who is watching the final, can you tell me if you have had no interuptions at all.

It's not a major issue, but a couple of times on slow motions, the signal has flickered at just the wrong moment!
