It is just for their bank accounts, nothing to do with CCs

    I've been Money Tipped!
I wouldn't have thought that by saying 'i'm leaving them' was classed as arrogant, rather the opposite in that the guy that responded comes across as arrogant - what a pathetic response, rather not bothering would have been suffice!

I can't remember asking for your opinion

I'll tell you what's really pathetic. It's someone who only joined this site in February and has made nearly 3200 posts. Now maths was never my thing but I make that between 30 and 40 posts a day. Get a life!

This is an internet forum and I couldn't give a flying f*** about your opinion despite the fact that you must spend every waking hour prowling these boards looking for the minutest excuse to impart your warped logic.

Lol.... I'm off for a pint with some real people

I asked for a second card reader and have received a secure message that tells me each customer is only entitled to one. The security has gone too far - I should be able to tranfer money between my smile accounts without the card reader.

topher ring up and ask for a reader. I asked for 2 more (3 in total) and was told that would be fine. They haven't arrived yet, but when I said as I need one everywhere I go, they agreed that keeping one at home and one at partners was a good idea if I lost another one.

Personally I don't much mind using a card reader if it increases security and protects my cash.

It's only small so take it on holiday with you (any additional security when at a foreign internet cafe must be a good thing!), and yes, keep one at work, one at home. BTW - they are interchangable. You can use your Nat West one for your Tesco account etc - it's the card that's unique.

Now - changing topic just a tad: Do they actually increase security??

Or just increase the customer's perception of the security level?
  • 'bye. Shut the door and turn off the lights on your way out.

Just had my first experience with these card readers.
Needed to change a standing order which would normally take a couple of minutes.
Instead my wife and I spent about 20 minutes trying to get this thing to work without success. I'm an IT Consultant and am not unfamiliar with technology and the internet and online shopping/banking etc yet we could not get the damn thing to work even when following the instructions to the letter.

Eventually the account got locked out and we had to call the 0870 number to unlock the account.
To our surprise we were told that we had to next visit an ATM where we would apparently be given an option to unlock/reset the pin number or something. This is supposed to be ONLINE BANKING for pete's sake

Whilst on the phone we got the guy to set the standing order up thus bypassing the card reader. So where's the security in that ?

How many criminals are there out there that hack into peoples accounts and set up a traceable standing order or direct debit ?
How many criminals hack into an account and transfer money to their own account (again a traceable activity).

How will these card readers prevent the cashiers in Shell Petrol stations from cloning my card and using it abroad (something that has now happened to me twice)

The card reader is a complete waste of time and offers absolutely no additional security to the end user.

I may well shut the door and turn off the lights on my way out. I've been with Smile since they first started and will soon be closing my account.

Quite a lot - what do you think all those phishing mails are?? The card readers will help stop that!

They won't - who claimed they would? What will stop that is a world wide roll out of C&P or us removing the magstripes off the back of our cards (but that would stop us using them in non-C&P countries - e.g. USA). Alternatively - Shell could switch their C&P readers so that you don't insert the card more than 1/3rd of the way in (e.g. enough to read the chip) - like Boots. That would stop the mag stripe being skimmed and thus stop the problem. Shell seem to have added 'security' stickers to their card readers - but they seem to have moved every time I go in ...

I disagree and if you see the number of people who post here about how there's been a transfer out of their online account - it's almost always on a non-card reader using bank. This will stop all but the most sophisticated man in the middle attacks for phishing. It even stops keyloggers - because even if they get your online login and one code for the card reader - it won't help them initiate a new transfer.

Of course, it's possible to initiate a phishing attack where a middle man site requests each bit of info from you progressively and interacts with the bank website on the backend to prompt you correctly and enter the data - but it's still a one-off attack and you have to enter the right values. E.g. it'd have to persuade you to transfer x thousand out - which you'd have to enter into the card reader ...

That would suggest you were entering your pin incorrectly. It is the card that does all the calculations and thus if you enter the pin incorrectly 3 times - it will lock you out - just like it will if you enter it incorrectly at an ATM. A very sensible security precaution in case your card is stolen along with something with your name/DOB (e.g. your driving license) on in my opinion. I wouldn't like someone to be able to use their own card reader, and my card to figure out how to login to my bank.

  • I think you make fair points on the whole but I don't understand why anyone would hack an account and set up a direct debit from that account to another account. Surely that's traceable. As soon as its spotted then the person would call their bank and arrange for that money to be transferred back whilst at the same time the other bank would hopefully be investigating the owner of the other account.

If I somehow hacked into your account and set up a direct debit or standing order then I'm simply going to be be caught even if I live in another country or am I being naive. ?

The card readers are a huge faff. I've never lost money online nor conducting business from my armchair at home. The only time I've lost money is at shell petrol stations !!
There should be a way to opt out or the system should be much easier to use.

I know my pin number. I enter it all the time at atms and and shops. I've had the same pin number for about 10 years. There is absolutely no way I could have entered it incorrectly 3 times at home.
