smile card readers and FP

Well looks like smile is going fully functional with card readers. I got mine the other week and didn't have to use it until now.
You have to use your reader for all internet bank functions, bar checking your balance. So for all transfers, bill payments, standing orders (old or new, setting up etc) you have to use it and for making transfers and bill payments old or new you have to use it.
Also, I was told on the phone, that you may be asked to use it over the phone as well for certain transactions!! Seems a bit overkill, but it's compulsory and you can't opt out. I've ordered 3. One for home, one for my pocket and one for at my partners house.
My argument to them for 3 was that as the only function you can do without a card reader is view balance, I would need it everywhere I went otherwise I'd be stuck.
On the FP front, you can do a max of 2 per day and each one has a limit of £85. So that's £170 per day in 2 separate transactions, then all over transfers going via BACS.
Ah well, each to their own I guess.

I have to say that I'm not fussed about card readers. What does get on my nerves is the inconsistent way they are implemented by each bank. For example, RBS/NatWest only make you use it to set up new payments, whereas Nationwide needs it for each transaction.
I feel the RBS approach is good, Nationwide (and now Smile) is overkill.43580 -
I think it was a polite way of saying f*** o** for all we care. Arrogance isn't something which will endear you to many people.
I wouldn't have thought that by saying 'i'm leaving them' was classed as arrogant, rather the opposite in that the guy that responded comes across as arrogant - what a pathetic response, rather not bothering would have been suffice!
Back on subject, how would these card readers be any use, say you go abroad (most banks say transfer funds from savings into current in case you lose card etc) and need to make a transfer, you pop into an internet cafe and then what? You have to carry a silly reader to make any transaction or ring the bank at an extortionate rate?
No wonder people are leaving!2010 - year of the troll

Hi
Does the card reader connect to the pc or is it a stand alone unitDMP mutual support thread member:3270 -
I hate these things - so inconvenient
Does anyone know if they will have to be used when transferring funds between Smile & Coop accounts that both belong to me?0 -
They are standalone units and are needed for all transfers between any accounts and on some phone transfers according to smile.0

I have one for my RBS a/c and I just find it an annoying inconvenience.
OH and I have a joint credit card with Smile. Do you think we will be issued with a card reader for it too or is it just if you have a bank a/c with them??Spreading the gospel that is Martin Lewis to the future generation....I'm a Home Economics Teacher and being thrifty is the way!:A0
