I'm not 100% sure if this is correct... but I think you are officially allowed to tell the debt collection company to record a disassociation between yourself and the debtor. Assuming they are not related to you and you don't have any financial association (joint accounts, business partners, etc.) then you may have a claim against the debt collection company for harassment if they don't leave you alone.

I wish I could remember where I heard that... Hang on... this sounds like the sort of thing:

Get a whistle and blow it down the phone the next time they call you.

Or don't hang up, ask them to hold and put the phone behind the sofa for the rest of the night.

    OP
if you contact BT and tell them about the calls they are able to change your telephone number free of charge
we had a similar experience and BT simply changed our number within 48 hours and now I am VERY particular who I give it to as I work from home and the phone ringing day and night is a distraction - so we don't get many unsolicted calls at all

the problem is, this Tony person has put my number down either in error or deliberately I'm not sure and I have had countless Indian call centres calling me for months! I don't really want to change my number. The company that has called me is trying to offer him a loan or debt management plan.

If you are sure it is them that are harassing you, contact the police and make a formal complaint. Make a complaint to trading standards as well. If their behaviour is as you suggest, they are acting in a criminal fashion.

I was shaken up after the 2 phone calls from them (using a withheld number on both occasions) accusing me of saying such a thing. I don't understand what type of company would permit their employees to act in such a disgraceful and mallicious fashion. I must admit I have put my phones on silent overnight to try and escape from the constant ringing.

    Hi

Hope I am posting in the right place, I have just had a very very nasty experience with a company called Matrix debt management. I asked them to remove my number as I am getting calls day and night and tbh I got a bit upset and told them that it was harrassment and that I would report them to TPS. Within 2 mins of putting the phone down someone called me back saying they where going to call the police as I had threatened to blow up their offices!! I DIDN'T.... Then the cheeky horror called back and threatened me!
Any idea who I can report them to apart from TPS because I am getting totally fed up with the phone ringing!

    Thanks

You can call BT and ask them to check the history of the calls and log a complaint that you are being harrassed by these people and that some of the calls have been malicious. BT will at first monitor the calls and then intercept the calls on your behalf and finally block the number from ringing you. Start by rining the operator to complain and they will pass your complaints to BT malicious calls unit for investigation. The information gained by BT can be used in criminal prosecution against this company. Good luck

I don't know if you still can, but you used to be able to ask BT to block any with held numbers from contacting you.
Best advise first is to ring BT (best of luck though - make sure you've an hour free first) and report whats happening. They'll be able to at least put a stop to the calls in the hope of some peace and quiet whilst you dis-associate yourself from 'Tony'.

Be careful if you did make a bomb threat as someone in my local paper was jailed for four years for that.
