That throws a different light on things.

3 units(33kWh) is reasonable consumption. However 12 gas units(133kWh) in one day for mid May is extremely high.

Have you any idea how consumption could increase 4 fold from one day to another?

    Hi Cardew,

There just doesn't appear to be a logical explanation.
I'm almost inclined to think someone indoors is deliberately running the gas products to wind me up! Almost.
3 uniits again for latest reading.
Just looking for possible reasons, would putting the heating on for a couple of hours burn 9 units? I ask though am not aware of this having been done. None of the family know I am looking into this so there is no reason for anyone to tell fibs to my very casual questioning.
31 kWh is certainly better than 201 average!
    Cheers.

I was under the impression the distribution energy company owns the meters and it is there job e.g

    Central Scotland = Scottish Power
Highlands = Southern Electric (Scottish Hydro)

    Check with Your distributor.

Oh no no no no no. The system is such that there are quite a few MAMs, industry speak for meter asset manager. One of the biggest owners of meters are the gas distribution co's or their subsidiaries for eg National Grid Metering is a MAM. Gas suppliers pay rental to the MAM for the use of the meter. Some energy suppliers are taking it upon themselves to become a MAM. For instance,British Gas are a MEM and are in the business of removing National Grid metering meters and fitting their own. Of course they dont have their own staff to do this so they hoof it downline to get it done as cheaply as possible by a subcontractor.

There are wahy too many fingers in the metering pie.

OFGEM encouraged metering competition and instead, they have presided over a leviathon which has grown and grown until there is a loss of control,a loss of consistency,a loss of data, and safety is compromised.

Think back to the old days. British Gas corporation, one meter,no one messed around changing this that or the other every other yeas,no massive bills, one supplier, one number to ring.

Maybe they WERE the 'good old days', after all.

    Oh dear.
Only 6 metric units used over the weekend!

Which is giving an average of 3 over the last four days.
Much better and of course if it stays there or there abouts going forward then obviously I should be pleased however it will mean no chance of getting anything out of British Gas re the previous consumption. Maybe they've fixed a problem and not said anything. Surely not!
Burden of proof on me I suppose.:wall:

Did they give a price for a meter test?

    Yep, sixty-odd quid. Up front.
Might seem silly but too much for me, especially at the moment.

Bit pointless too, given your current meter readings. As said earlier, it seems the starting reading was inaccurate, not the meter.

    Hi All,

    An update.

    Last 14 days readings are:

64 units; 715.53 kWh total; 51.11 kWh daily average.

This includes just 1 unit of gas used in the last 24 hours!

A far more sensible (and pleasing) usage. Don't know why the last unit reading is so low though as average is 4.57 units, with 3 units on most days being normal consumption.
I amended the boiler clock slightly in the first week but no discernable difference.
Which is great for now and ongoing but leaves me stuffed with the outstanding amount 'I' owe.

I wonder whether British Gas will be reasonable and split the difference based on my last two weeks daily average 51.11 kWh compared to the 201 kWh over the 7 months from end August to mid April.

See that, a sense of humour!

Obviously I do appreciate it has been relatively mild recently but we didn't actually have a dreadful end of summer/autumn/winter to warrant those usage figures. My opinion only?

    Cheers All,

    Gary.
