You wont need a separate cd for the latest version, 8.04 will upgrade to 8.10 still I think and 8.10 to 9.04 (step by step takes a few hours to download depending on your internet connection, I have done it fairly quick many times with 10MB broadband <GRIN>).

if you install it inside windows then your pretty much just running ubuntu as an application, to install on a different partition make sure the disk is in and the computer is set to boot from cd in the bios and then itll automatically go into the ubuntu installer

When you boot up it asks which OS you want to use.
Also, I use my mobile as a modem so it will take a long time to download! I'm just hoping I can use my mobile for the internet on Ubuntu...

Not sure if the mobile connections are supported in ubuntu yet (not saying they arent as really have no idea) but if i were to bet I would say it would be, might want to google "orange 3g ubuntu" (or whoever your provider is).

Oh right sounds like it does install it properly then, I've always done it straight off the cd not from inside windows. Sure it didnt ask to to enter a username and password during installation? if it didnt try your windows one in lowercase without any spaces

It asks for a password before installation. Didn't notice it the first time. I'm in the middle of trying again now. If it doesn't support mobile connections I'm wasting my time though.

Is it a netbook you're installing this on btw? (just guessing from the fact its going to be a mobile connection, if so then you might want to get 9.04 netbook remix edition, meant to run quite well on them.

Quite a few results googling "3g modem ubuntu" so I think it will work, looks like a few little things to do though. First result looks handy.

    I'm currently running Ubuntu 9.04

Ubuntu should see your mobile as a USB modem (It see's mine as one!)

It WILL take AGES on a mobile to upgrade to the latest version (roughly 500Mb of files)

Best go to a Internet cafe and burn the latest on to CD...

Sounds like you installed it while you were in windows? (called Wubi installer). that's the best way to get to know Ubuntu as you can easily go in to windows Add / Remove and get rid of it if you make a mistake! :D

If you get stuck ask questions here or in the main Ubuntu forums http://ubuntuforums.org/index.php

    It's a desktop I'm using.
I finally got it working, after the 3rd install. Got the internet working as well.
It's a bit slow and jerky (Ubuntu, not the internet) but that might be because I have 2 operating systems on a 10gig/512MB RAM PC.

ok first thing to do is go to:
System (at the top of the screen)
    Preferences
    Appearance

Then go to the last tab "Visual Effects"
and Select "none" (it will probably be set to "normal")
The screen might flash for a bit, this turns off the effects and should give you a smoother desktop. :D

Yeah it asks you for a user name and password when you set it up, assumed you used wubi.

Ubuntu needs a lot less space (and spec) than windows but I like to give it at least 6gig to get your programs and files on (I think 2gig is minimum but thats really pushing it!

Your RAM should be fine to be honest, Ubuntu really doesnt need too much, try switching off fancy display things, from memory its in preferences>appearance and switch to basic effects.

You might want to try a lighter weight version such as Xubuntu (uses a different user interface called XFCE). This needs less computing power but you can pretty much do the same things with it, it can even do the fancy stuff like transparent windows i believe.

If your not happy with Ubuntu, i'd go for Xubuntu as the next port of call.

Post note: much better explanation of switching off effects given above!
