Just installed Ubuntu, I installed it inside Windows. It's asking for a username and password and nothing I put in works. I wasn't given a password during installation so any idea why it's asking for one? It's version 8.04 desktop edition.

I am assuming you are talking about login passwords? Or are you talking about super user password?
i.e. Can you login but cant do anything else like installing updates coz it prompts for password?0 -
No idea what kind of password. It's just asking for a username and password. It won't let me do anything without it.The View Belongs To Everyone0

I suppose it's asking for a login password.The View Belongs To Everyone0

What I mean is - are you able to login to ubuntu?
Not quite sure what you mean installed it inside windows?
Assuming you can reboot and see a boot menu on your pc - you could choose ubtuntu rescue mode.
In rescue mode, look in the file /etc/passwd for the username
then type at the command line
passwd username
where username is the username you got from that file above and then you can choose a new password which you will know.
To be honest your best option is to install ubuntu separately and I think thats what you probably have - but cant tell from the information you have given.
Also note the latest version of ubuntu is 9.04 - best to use later version - it has a new thing which enables you to avoid entering username password at login altogether - so no logon credentials - you still need to do a bit more later on if you get further.0 -
Just uninstalled it. It asks for a username and password before installing. Trying again...The View Belongs To Everyone0

Gud idea and this time install it in a separate partition - it will automatically detect xp or windows so you can boot into either.
And remember the password and username this time - upgrade to 9.04 and enjoy! Who needs windooooows 7.0 -
Try putting in your windows username and password, if you have no password on your windows and login as administrator then just put administrator as the username and leave the password blank.0

It wouldn't let me log in at all. When you install inside Windows it installs it alongside Windows, so you have the option which one to use when booting up. I'll get the latest version if I like it.The View Belongs To Everyone0
