I can recommend Pollock and its better for the environment! If its a pie type dish its always nicer to have a variety of fish in the dish IMHO! Goodluck!

I was going to recommend coley - IMHO, a much under-rated fish. However, I also fully accept Joe's right to his opinion.

Thanks. It's just a matter of personal taste, some people will like it and others won't. That's why I recommended buying a little to taste it before splashing out on enough to feed 14.

They are selling a fish fillet in Mr A. Its called River Cobbler. Dont know if it is river fish or sea fish, neither did the assistant!!!!

This has been mentioned in here before, or maybe on the green board. I did a bit of research and found it was farmed in a river in Vietnam which is the most polluted/toxic river in the world.

Well, it is if you believe everything you read on the net. I have no evidence one way or the other.

Can any one recommend some moneysaving white fish fillets with a good flavour?

I'm cooking a baked fish dish for 14 people this weekend that needs either cod fillets or another white fish.

    Any ideas?

If you are REALLY on a budget, then I can personally recomend Tesco Value white fish. It is cooked from frozen and you get a bag of 800g for under £2 and is very nice. I season with salt, pepper and value herbs (22p) and cook in the Remoska and found it not to be too fishy IYKWIM.

I use half a bag for a pie for 4 people. So you would probably need about 5 bags:confused:

I got a smoked and dyed river cobbler fillet (220g at £6.99 per Kg = £1.54) in ASDA tonight, for a fish pie I am doing tomorrow.

If I survive, I will let you know.

PS. Don't knock those blocks of frozen white fish. I've done a lovely fish curry on holiday with a pack of of - IIRC - whiting.

  • Sainsburys basic frozen fish, I think it is about £1.12 for about 6 fillets and it is Pollock

will keep an eye out for Pollock - thanks. they didn't have it in Morrisons tonight but will try it if I see it

Haven't some places started to call it something different (can't remember what though) as people don't like asking for pollock?

From someone who isn't a massive fish fan, I really like coley. :)

    What a load of pollocks.

Mind you, I like what the Cornish pilchard fishermen have done to boost sales.

Firstly, the humble pilchard is now called the "Cornish sardine". To all intents and purposes, they are the same fish. If it's in the Atlantic or English Channel, it is (or was) a pilchard. If it's in the Med', it's a sardine. The new name makes the same thing sound more upmarket.

They also tag and log each catch. So, when you buy a "Cornish sardine", you can evidently enter it's number into the 'net, and see who caught it!

Very clever marketing and use of IT, and sales are up.

    Mmm, Stargazy pie.
