What fish?

Options
Can any one recommend some moneysaving white fish fillets with a good flavour?

I'm cooking a baked fish dish for 14 people this weekend that needs either cod fillets or another white fish.

Any ideas?

I can't recommend anything, but would advise you to test any suggestions first.

Don't go buying enough fish for 14 people if you have never tried it. Nip out tomorrow and buy a little of what is suggested and try it for your self.

I once bought colley, if that's the right spelling, because it was recommend on here as being a cheap alternative to cod.

I'll eat blu-tak before I eat that stuff again.

I was going to recommend coley - IMHO, a much under-rated fish. However, I also fully accept Joe's right to his opinion.

Take a look at haddock, hake, ling, plaice, pollack/pollock or whiting. I also like to try and use some smoked and/or even some dyed fish, because smoked fish tastes nice and dyed fish just looks pretty.

Have to agree with Joe, coley isn't nice.

Pollock is a cheap alternative to Cod and tastes fab, especially battered.

For your MSE pie, I would suggest a few pieces of smoked haddock (4 small fillets would be enough for 14). A good piece of ling and pollock should fill out the dish nice. If you can get some salted ling, it would be even better. You need to skin it, steep in water overnight, simmer it for 15 mins and add to your pie. A few fillets of salted ling would add a nice saltiness and texture to the dish.

Salted ling is nice cold (after you have boiled it offcourse)

I did this. went to Morrisons after work and got cod, haddock and whiting. Then I baked the dish in 3 different dishes and did a taste test. it's a toss up between the whiting and haddock - and they cost less than the cod

I used coley as the main ingredient of a fish pie recently when I couldn't get any cod. It was fine.
  • They are selling a fish fillet in Mr A. Its called River Cobbler. Dont know if it is river fish or sea fish, neither did the assistant!!!! It is quite firm in texture, so should be suitable for baking. You can also buy it smoked. A lot cheaper than any other white fish.
