Channels missing on new TV with built in Freeview

Hi guys,

Looking for some help...
We used to have a Matsui Freeview box connected to our old CRT-television, and we would get all the Freeview channels.

We have now upgraded to a new Panasonic Plasma TV (Panasonic P42C10B) with built in Freeview.

I installed the TV today, and ran the automatic search for channels. However, there are several channels missing on the built in Freeview that we would get before with the external Freeview box (ITV, Channel 4,.... although we get ITV2+1, but not ITV2 itself)

Any idea how this can be, or how I can fix this?
It doesn't seem to be a signal issue, as we could get all the channels before.
Could it be that the built in antenna is not as strong as the external box one? Can I do a manual search to add these missing channels, or would I need to invest in a extra antenna or booster?

BTW, we live in a flat, so cannot upgrade the outside antenna...

Thanks a lot already!

Some tuners are more sensitive than others, but I would expect a Panasonic TV to be good. It could interference from other cabling, loose connection, try wiggling the leads around a bit, and moving the aerial lead from other electrical wires/points. Try a different coax lead if you have one.

Probably have to use an amplifier to get them

Run it again and see if there are any updates. Then ring the shop who sold it to you :) Im sure you will get it sorted.

Keep running the autoscan, it's not unusual for sets not to pick everything up. I live in a very strong signal area but sometimes when I scan I miss a few channels. I scan again a couple of minutes later and get them all.

The old Matsui Freeview box had an excellent tuner, far more sensetive than the built in unit in a Panasonic TV, connect the old Matsui to your Panasanic TV, I bet you will get all channels again.

Of course there is nothing wrong with your TV, it just doesn't have as good a tuner.

Cure, get a better aerial fitted.

Thanks a lot for all your replies!

We did connect the old Matsui box to the Panasonic television yesterday, and hey presto... all channels are available again! So we definitely know we can get them in our area.

It is a bit of a shame though that we have built-in Freeview, but still have to go via the Matsui box, therefor missing out on the "flash" menu and all options of the built-in Freeview...

Regarding getting a better aerial fitted, unfortunately we live in a flat with a shared aerial on the roof, so won't be able to do this.
The only thing we could try is to change the coax cable inside the flat, and possible get an amplifier fitted.

Would it be possible to plug one of these stand-alone antenna's into the Panasonic television to boost the signal to the built-in Freeview tuner? (i.e.: http://www.pixmania.co.uk/uk/uk/742902/art/tnb/dark-booster-indoor-tv-fm.html)

Will also try to do several more scans to see if it brings up any extra channels....

    Thanks again!

A standalone amp might be a better (and cheaper) solution

Contact the dealer, you shouldnt really have that problem. Our built in freeview is perfect, better than when we had the box stuck on top of the old tv. Give the dealer a ring and ask their advice.

In the Radio Times a couple of weeks ago (page 144), there was a letter from a reader regarding the same thing. I have typed it out below along with their response.
"Due to a transmitter change, some Freeview viewers in the South East can no longer receive ITV1, ITV2, ITV3 or ITV4 and will not be able to do so until 2012 etc etc...". The response from the Times was "It'll be little consolation, but this isn't a nationwide problem, you're in a small minority. The change happened on 25 March in the Meridian area, work was done on the Rowridge transmitter to avoid interference from other UK regions and France, where digital switchover has happened already. Most households had to retune their digibox, some needed further advice from Digital UK or an aerial booster. A few that had been picking up the vestiges of the Rowridge signal despite being outside its official catchment area lost some channels, and won't regain them until 2012. But Freeview never claimed to cover the entire country (it currently reaches 73 per cent of it and will ultimately serve 98 per cent) which is partly why Freesat was launched....................and Freeview viewers will in any case want to retune on 20 May, in order to receive the new 24 hour version of Virgin1". (Extracted from the Radio Times).

Don't buy that aerial from Pixmania, you could try a booster from Argos, take it back if it doesn't help.
