PBS, you will note that I said

I think it may be more complicated to renew an EXPIRED passport than one that is still valid.

I did not state it as fact (as some people do).
I have a vague recollection that an expired passport may need to be verified by another person.

Have just retuned from Spain on Friday .Checked with travel agents before we left as my sons passport expires mid june .No problems with it and saved the expense of renewing it until next month .

Thanks for the advice all - I am pretty certain we'll be ok as the tour operators terms and conditions refer us to the Foreign Office for uptodate info. So unless Spain change their policy in the next week we'll be ok.
