Do I need to know anything about RAM.
I was about to make an order for the one below:
"Kingston ValueRAM 1GB 400MHz DDR2 Non-ECC SO-DIMM 200-pin".
All these technical values....
200 pins??????
No sure if will do for my Dell PC.

sodimms are for laptops, ddr2s is the most common ram type but newer motherboards have ddr3.
If you post what model computer you have it'll be easier to tell you what ram you need,
OR you can goto http://www.crucial.com/ they heve a little downloadable app that will tell you what ram you need0 -
Thanks for quick reply.
will do when get home.
Actually is a dell Dimension 3100c(is all i remember).0 -
Crucial all the way0

These are tecnical details from www.crucial.com (thanks RobTank)
Maximum Memory Capacity: 2048MB
Currently Installed Memory: 512MB
Available Memory Slots: 0
Number of Banks: 2
Dual Channel Support: Yes
CPU Manufacturer: GenuineIntel
CPU Family: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.00GHz Model 4, Stepping 9
CPU Speed: 2992 MHz0 -
The crucial scan is telling you that you already have both slots full, with 256MB in each (making 512MB total). The maximum capacity is 2GB (1GB in each slot). So unless you want to max out the RAM to 2GB (in which case you replace both modules with 1GB ones), the most econmic solution is to remove one 256MB module and replace that with a 1GB module. That will give you 1,280MB of RAM, i.e. 2.5 times what you have at present. No free lunch, and no free laptop0

You really really best off with a matched pair.
Asynchronous dual channel (allows mismatched ram) was only introduced around the time the P4s were released, some boards were produced that do not support it.
Besides performace is better with a matched pair anyway, and ram is pretty cheap these days anyway.0 -
The crucial scanner will tell you if you need to install a matched pair.No free lunch, and no free laptop0

with dual channel support I'd be sticking in 2x1GBUtinam logica falsa tuam philosophiam totam suffodiant.0

thanks for replies.
Do i need to consider pin numbers,or are they universal?
What about CPU frequency...
Will it mater(any bottleneck)?

the scanner should be telling you that stuff...and suggesting what you buy...all you then need to do is find a cheaper supplier (if you like)Utinam logica falsa tuam philosophiam totam suffodiant.0
