Every private landlord in England will have to put their details on a national register, under government plans.
Landlords who fail to carry out essential repairs or who do not keep tenants' deposits safe could be struck off the list.
..Under the plans, tenants would also be given a minimum of two months' notice if they have to leave their home because their landlord's property had been repossessed.

Can't wait - I can single-handedly strike several landlords off the list.
Why - just imagine, some landlords might have to actually remember that tenants are people and not just cattle!
Whatever next.0 -
Sounds good provided efforts are made to track down those that don't register.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. We have had Landlord registration in Scotland for three years now, so far seems to be pretty useless in dealing with any actual problems or landlord who are not registered, I have tried to report two individuals who I know are renting without being registered, the Council were completely uninterested.
Also a lack of advertising means hardly anyone knows about it, so many of my friends rent and have no idea that their landlord should be register.0 -

Whatever next.
Whatever next - A list of good and bad tenants.
Only good to be fair.
I have no problem with a landlord register, I've registered on the Scottish one.
Could be good to have one for tenants as well to ease the credit checking that needs to be done for new tenants:wall:
What we've got here is....... failure to communicate.
Some men you just can't reach.

I am a landlord on the Scottish Register and in my personal view it is primarily for two purposes
1) Initial generation of money due to the fee to register.
and
2) generate a list of people to check against tax returns for.
As a landlord, I see very little benefit.
I signed up and was automatically accepted pending checks.
In the three years since, I have not had any information saying I have been accepted, but know I am still on the register.
I do get occasional e-mails advising of legislation changes which is beneficial, but that is all.:wall:

I don't pay for them though, my prospective tenants do.
There is only so much information available in a credit check though, so a similar registration / list could save my tenants money and provide more information.
What would be good is one site / registration for both landlords and tenants.
Transparency all round is the key:wall:
