Thought I'd report back on the first couple of days in case it inspires anyone else.

Went to the V&A yesterday and ended up spending the whole day there. They do free guided tours (c.45mins - 1hr) of the British galleries and a free introductory tour of the museum highlights. There's free activity packs for children and activity packs for adults as well (didn't look at them but it might be worth exploring). Late night opening every Wednesday (free), with some free talks and free music recitals in the Norfolk Room.

Today's been an 'At Home' craft day. Nearly finished making two large cushion covers :j

Thanks Nabowla - I'm certainly interested in hearing about what you get up to...any ideas about cheap ways to entertain yourself on holiday is good with me  (am ashamed to say I live about 2 miles from the V&A, and work 10 minutes walk away but have not been in the last 10 years! Thats going to change thanks to you, so cheers for that!! ).

Congrats on the cushion covers, and good luck for the rest of your holiday - I look forward to hearing more about it and picking up some more tips from you! :D

I could also have a day trying out some new recipes from that huge stack of cooking books that I bought in my pre-lightbulb days. Might as well get some benefit from all that money I spent ;)
Copy the recipes that you think you would like to try out then sell the books! Make some money to treat yourself. You could try Amazon, https://www.greenmetropolis.com (no listing fees) or eBay.

We’re having a debt free holiday, by swapping with friends in Liverpool for the week. They are setting out some low cost days and I’ve been given a NT Press card to use.

My tips are as follows: -

Some areas do residents weeks/fortnights were you can go to loads of places for free. Also allot of sites offer off peak rates.

Some of the leaflets for attractions offer free for kids or bog off again just need picking up in a local pub or hotel.

Visit the local tic (tourist information centre) to you or where you are on holiday they are a wealth of knowledge of what you can do for free or low-cost.

We seem to have loads of places near us, which also offer a resident discount card or lower price for residents.

Look at season tickets for anywhere you go regularly, we have a historic house near us which cost 16.00 for the year for my wife the kids are still free and they go at least once or twice a week in the summer, normal cost is about 6.00.

My best tip is work in the industry I do and you can go to loads of places for free.

Day out window shopping at Bluewater Shopping Centre with friend or daughter who is doing the spending. Lunch at pizza express or food hall (under a tenner), cinema tickets approx £4-£6 cant remember exactly but not too bad as long as you dont buy sweets or drinks at the cinema shop. Buy these before going into cinema at Boots or M&S perhaps. Special treat coffee or hot chocolate at Starbucks. Fantastic retail therapy. Lovely shopping centre. Great day out if you like looking but not spending.
The forest would be very silent if no birds sang except for the birds that sang the best

  • The Royal Opera House has a free Monday lunchtime recital @ 1pm.

St Martins in the fields (Trafalgar Sq) also has free Monday lunchtime music sessions.

There are SO MANY great museums in London; Maritime, Theatre, Toy, Clockmakers, Canal, Army etc etc http://www.first4london.com/directory/Tourism_and_Attractions/Museums/

You can go on the radio 4 website to find out about tickets for the shows - they're always free - can also get them for other things - like Radio wales/S4C stuff in cardiff - but takes longer to record show sometimes than you may bargain for - stopping and editing etc!

I recently changed jobs and now work about 2 miles from my house. The bus fares up here actually charge me the maximum fare for this 'long' journey - £1.60 each way which I think is atrocious. This would put me back £16 per week or £832 per year once I worked it out! So I decided to lay aside the £16 in change at the start of the week and whatver was left in that wee purse would represent the number of times I had walked rather than bussed. This amount will then be put into the xmas jar (at least that is the idea) and will help ease the December burden Started last week and 'saved' £11.20. So far this week have only taken bus once so that is another £4.80 to go in on Friday. With over 5 stone in weight to lose I will try my best to lose Lbs whilst gaining £s.

    Wish me luck!
