Nothing is growing.....

Lotus-eater, its funny you mentioning about beans, because I popped two seeds in next to one of my arches back in mid-April which sprouted almost straight away, but the other areas weren't ready for planting, so I left planting them until two weeks later, yet there is still no sign of them germinating. I am on the verge of just buying plants (trying not to as I have lots of seed so will have another go raising some indoors, but hate planting stuff out late and missing out on a crop!)
I was wondering whether the lack of rain has really dried the beds out - thank goodness we have had a little rain overnight here as my huge waterbutt was practically dry (no rain for ages).
Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!

I doubt its slugs. I'm growing carrots, beetroot and parsnips in NI, and most germinated fine, and we're plagued with slugs. They were very slow though, probably the cold weather. And then the hail stones mushed them.

Slugs don't usually bother carrots IMO and they germinate quite well. Parsnips on the other hand are very touch and go.Northern Ireland club member No 382 :j0 -
Slugs will eat carrot seedlings as soon as they come up. They really like them.Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.0

The only thing that seems to have failed miserably here (East Mids) is my Spring Onions (White Lisbon). Sowed them direct into my new raised bed about a month ago (they were the first thing I put in) and nothing, not one, has germinated. Carrots, marigolds, nasturtiums, lettuce, peas, Hestia beans in baskets all doing fine.
I do have 2 anomalies with the seedlings on my windowsill. Firstly my Butternut Squash has three seed leaves instead of two, and secondly I have two hestia beans waiting for a basket so I planted another and it has come up almost perfectly white. It's getting plenty of sunlight and it's about 5 inches tall so I have no idea what the problem is. It's growing fine, just has absolutely no colour at all, poor thing
.
ETA - The leaves on the Hestia are almost perfectly white, the stalk is going pink."A cat can have kittens in the oven, but that don't make them biscuits." - Mary Cooper

Real mix here in South Wales. New potatoes will be ready for first cropping in 2 weeks, garlic looks good, maincrop onions fine and peas just coming into flower after growing away from slugs. Lifted leaf beet last week after 2 months of spring greens as they were starting to bolt and have sown more.
But only 15 out of 21 3yo asparagus have appeared so far, broad beans have struggled with slugs which have also shredded sweet corn and most runner beans aided by some strong winds over last 2 weeks. And I didnt divide rhubarb last autumn and its overcrowded.
2 pumpkins taken by slugs/snails but courgettes and outdoor cucumber happy under cloches. Carrots have germinated but very slow.
Worst problem was using cheap compost for early indoor sowings so had to resow toms, cucumbers, courgettes and brussel sprouts as well as chuck away marigolds and leaf salad that didnt develop a root system. Greenhouse is a month behind where it should be
Have this week sown direct more runners, plus climbing and dwarf french beans, and will be transplanting swiss chard and psb and replacement brussels next month.
Soft fruit looking good, apples a mix with cox looking set for good crop but James Grieve doing a biennial and other trees still very young but greengage will fruit for first time
Just seen that melon seed has germinated today so with a Wilko moneymaker aubergine will jave a bit of variety in the greenhouse with plum and tamina toms, cucumber, basil and french marigolds.0 -

Must be because I grow mine in a pot then. Usually doesn't stop them though!Northern Ireland club member No 382 :j0 -
The only things that have failed for me are broccoli which came up white then stopped growing and died and the brussle sprouts which suddenly died and the 2nd lot got eaten by bugs. I've bought plants to replace them.
My corn has stopped growing since I planted it out but I was a bit early so hopefully it'll start growing again once it gets warmer at night.
Parsnips, carrots and onions are all doing well.0
