No. If your needs are reasonably simple, you may be able to get new life out of your existing rig for little or no expense using a variant of linux. I would recommend Ubuntu, who have brilliant support on their forums. You can change just about anything in the settings. You may also want to look at distrowatch to see the most popular flavours from around the world.

As I say, we really need to know what you need to be doing, and we can work out what you need from there.

timbim, with regards to Ubuntu, do you know if it will run

    1. Skype
    2. BBC iPlayer
    3. iTunes
Thanks. Will dig out my newest old laptop and see if it has enough ram to run ubuntu.

Don't know about skype, but it's quite possible that someone has developed an equivalent that can sign into skype and do everything it does. iPlayer will run inside firefox, and I've a feeling there's a way to get programs for playback later. As for iTunes, Linux can, with a few add-ons, manage music on an iPod, but you'dd need to use another store for buying tracks, maybe Amazon or Play.
Ubuntu is an ancient African word, meaning: 'I can't configure Debian'.
