Personally, and as I believe has been suggested before, I would remove AVG and stick on avast.

What is the machine currently doing/not doing that is causing concern?

Is this a laptop and is there a problem? If there's no problem just tidy up all the obvious stuff (Sony, Yahoo etc etc) if it's a bit sluggish.

AVG is an excellent application but it does need a bit of space to work well. When I say space I mean RAM. If everything is OK I'd leave it be.

Obviously, go get XPSP3 (linked to before -would be better of just to reposted in there) and the other things I mentioned. Also, you could remove AVG7 and AVG Anti-Spyware and move to AVG8 http://download.cnet.com/AVG-Anti-Virus-Free-Edition/3000-2239_4-10320142.html?part=dl-10044820&subj=dl&!!!!!button&cdlPid=11014801 Again, download that first, disconnect (unplug/disable your Internet) before unistalling and resinstalling security software.

As already said, if there's not a problem don't go looking for one because you'll find lots. That list you've given is only a snapshot of the installed software and its' processes on the machine. It's not really meant for maintenance if the machine has a severe problem. If there are problems I'd need much more (ie what's the problem, warning screens, error messages etc) info to diagnose anything.

Personal computers work very well for years and years and even longer when they are ill. It's really just how annoying the problems are -divided by the time you have or knowledge you want to learn- that makes you want to 'fix' them.

nothing infected there but it does need AVG updating as it's running an old version

go to control panel , then add/remove programs and remove AVG Anti Spyware and Avg Antivirus and Lavasoft Adaware then go here and download the latest version of AVG ( which includes anti malware/spyware as well as antivirus )

you may also want to uninstall the Yahoo toolbar and TomTom Home to speed things up if she does not use them

then go to www.windowsupdate.com and click on "Express" let it scan the PC then install ANY updates it finds , you may need to reboot and do it a few times to be clear , the latest builds are Xp Service Pack 3 and Internet Explorer 8 (the Pc has SP2 and IE6)

this is to close any security exploits that are around

then go to windows update one last time and click on "Custom" and download any hardware updates it offers

Highly unlikely. Maybe "most", "known" or "some".

Best bet is to not use IE at all and move to www.firefox.com and add some security Addons like AdBlockPlus and NoScript. Not perfect of course but much safer.
