Sorting a Student House

As per usual being the organised one i'm sorting my student house next year and want to make sure I get the best deal.
We cannot get any Cable facilities at the house. We have a BT landline that the current tenants are paying line rental on (around £11.50 a month). Their contract comes to an end one week before we move in.
Am I able to cancel the BT Landline (ie it'll still physically be present, just no line rental being paid) and still get broadband down the line?
Our basic requirement is broadband but if possible i'd quite like to have Setanta Sports and at a push Sky+ (recording capability) if possible. Can anyone point me in the right direction for some good deals?

You still have to pay line rental in order to get broadband down your telephone line.
Some ISPs offer broadband and calls packages that may be cheaper than paying BT separately for your line rental.
But all start from you having to have an active BT line. That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -
Just watchout for the contract lengths whoever you go with, the current trend is to 18month contracts which in my opinion is not good, who knows what may happen during the 18 months of a contract, so if you have to cancel before the contract is finished, you will be liable for the remaining months left, charges which could make it expensive.0

On the Setanta/Sky+ front, you might want to consider a TopUpTV+ box, which has the recording functions of Sky+ but for freeview, you can get a reconditioned box for £49.99 from TopUpTV, which offers 6 months of Setanta free for a £20 connection fee, then £10.99 per month - so the box is near enough FREE. Some people have had issues with this box, you might want to do a quick search, but even the reconditions ones come with some kind of warranty (I've got this box and it's working OK but I don't subscribe to Setanta).
The mobile broadband providers seem to have "routers" available these days converting a dongle into a local wifi signal - it will depend on your usage though, and the quality of signals available to you. Avoid any contracts with high run-on rates.0
