Guess who put their Lakeland bread keeper bag through the tumble drier....:o

What are they made of? What happens if you tumble dry them. Are they worth buying?

In case I miss you later Soappie, I hope you have a lovely holiday. I'm with NatWest and I got a card reader months ago. I was scared to use it for ages but it's very easy (I'm not saying you're worried about that btw just chattering on about myself). I don't know why they sent me one so long ago. I've only used it about three times.

Do have a good holiday Soappie, you've earned it :)

I need to get something off my chest, which I can't really tell DH.

I've told you his mum is ill in hospital. Well I'm rather annoyed with her because she didn't move from South Africa after FIL died 3 years ago. Presumably she thought she was never going to get ill or die, but it's left DH feeling very stressed. She's on her own down there. He doesn't know when, if, or how long he needs to go out there to sort stuff out for her - he's told her he wants her to leave and either move here (which probably isn't going to be a good idea - she'd never be able to afford to buy anything even if she sells up in SA) or Cyprus where her brothers and nieces and nephews live, and which would be relatively quick and easy for us to visit her. She's now agreed she will have to leave, but she'd have been better off moving when she was fit and able. OK, it doesn't read well now I've typed it down, but I'm sure you know what I mean

A few tips from a Cub-Camp-old-timer (as both parent and leader) ;-)

(This got long, by the way, but I figure it's nearly the weekend and we're allowed to go off-topic on the weekend, right?)

If you can get your hands on a wind-up torch, it's better than sending one with batteries (and saves sending spare batteries at all). Also means there's no problem if he forgets to turn it off.

Unless you have a very strict Cub leader, there will be a midnight feast. Send him with sweeties, but not something that will melt, or stick to his sleeping-bag/uniform/hair etc. Crisps get sat on and end up in sleeping-bags, with bits to poke you all night long, so also best avoided. Fizzy drinks are also a bad idea, partly because they can make kids hyper and partly because they have a diuretic effect. I promise that the adults camping with him will not thank you if he needs the loo every half-hour (day or night).

If it's a two-night camp, usually they all stay up until ridiculous o'clock on the first night (and the last Cub will fall asleep about 20 minutes before the first Cub gets up...) Then they all go to sleep very early on the second night, due to being knackered from the previous night lol.

If it might be cold overnight, send him with a hat in his sleeping-bag or pillowcase. He will not find it if it's in his bag. Other good methods of staying warm at night include a fleece blanket (lightweight) inside the sleeping-bag, or under the sleeping-bag (layer underneath is more effective than another on top).

I always send mine with comfy sweats and t-shirts (long-sleeved possibly) to wear overnight rather than actual pyjamas, because sweats and shirts can double up as extra clothes during the day if necessary.

If you're considering sending him with a mobile phone, ask the leader first. Do not send anything which anyone will be very upset about getting damaged or lost.

Hide a few sweeties in the bottom of his wash-bag - under the toothbrush and toothpaste. You'll be able to tell if he ever actually took the toothbrush and toothpaste out *grin*

Apart from those secret sweeties, pack his bag with him. Don't do it for him without him paying attention - and don't even think of giving him the list and getting him to pack it himself - 99% of Cubs will pack their Yugioh cards and half of a spare pair of socks and consider themselves sorted.

Send him in his mucky old trainers - not his brand-new shiny ones. If you have another pair of mucky old trainers, send those as spares. Only send the brand-new shiny ones as a last resort, and be prepared for them not to look either new or shiny on their return.

He will almost certainly come back exhausted - if they're getting back in the afternoon, have an easy-to-eat dinner ready for him and expect him to go to bed early. He will also likely come home filthy, and at least one of you will appreciate it if there's hot water for a bath. And he might well come back in exactly the same clothes he left in, right down to the socks. It happens a lot!

And finally, don't worry. He will almost certainly have a whale of a time, and most Cub leaders have lots of experience and ideas to make it all go well :-)

Thanks for the holiday wishes PollyB . The whole thing about NatWest was they never sent me one, nor sent me a letter or email telling me I'd need one! They just turned stuff off so that I have to have one! Then I can't get one for around two weeks....

Oooops - my blood pressure's going up again.

Right, I'm all packed apart from the perishables which are in the fridge and will be transferred to a cool box tomorrow.

Between us, DS and I have worked out how to connect my laptop to my mobile phone using call rather than data rates so I should be able to pop in a couple of times. I probably won't be able to thank etc. because it'll be a v. slow dial up line.

    i'm off to bed now.

    Sleep well everyone

    Hi All

Thanks again for all the thoughts & wishes, I was expecting a call from my cancer nurse today with my scan results but...........I have heard nothing, this doesn't bode well, if it had been clear they would have let me know.....I know I was the subject of a video conference to discuss treatment options so I can only assume they are coming up with a plan....annoyingly I doubt if I'll hear anything until after the weekend now......big thanks to sexymouse for her support x

soappie hope you have a lovely holiday & the weather improves for you...it was a bit grim here today

valli thanks for taking over the stars, not that there's any hope of me getting any!

    Toots continued love to you

    pigpen take care

Hugs to you all........you don't realise what a help you all are to me xxxx
