my sons laptop is misbehaving...every now and then it shuts itself down and other things happen like his cd/dvd player not being found and needing to be reinstalled ......ive just been using a few online scanners and ccleaner to have a look and it isnt picking anything up but i did notice it gets very hot....

it is insured to 08/09 so is it worth phoning them and telling them the problems and ask for it to be looked at?

thanks

You could do some maintainence yourself , you said it gets hot and shuts itself down, you could have dirt in the fans or on the hintsink , you could get a can of compressed computer cleaner air and use it down the grill on the laptop. might clean some dirt out.

The insurers will more thenm likely tell you to take it to a Recognised Computer repair shop like PC World. When did you buy the laptop and was it new / refurbished or second hand.

If it's getting hot try putting it on a laptop cooler :) How do you mean shutting it's self down, does it just go off all of a sudden without notice even when it's on mains power?

I would back up all your stuff and use the recovery cd's to re-install the OS. If it still shuts down take it back to where you purchased it from because there's something physically wrong with it. Laptops are really temperamental.

i used trend micro housecall/panda and kapersky and they only showed a couple of faults which i fixed and then rescanned and they didnt show up then - these were an issue with norton protection centre which i uninstalled and a couple of spyware things - the usual spyware that gets through...i used ccleaner to clean it all then

it was bought new summer 07 from currys....

and i wouldnt dare use a spray or something on it because i might then make it worse and then the insurers would turn round and say they wouldnt pay out because id dont the harm.....also - i wont be taking it to a repair centre and paying out for it doing when it is insured - surely this is what our insurance is for??

thanks for all your replies though....i will use my laptop vac on it and see if there is any dust in there though so thanks for that tip...xx

how many anti-virus software have you got installed?

with the taking to pc world item . When my dad droped his laptop and he phoned the insurance company to tell them they said take it to a computer repair shop and get a quote , they have a list of where they take it to but they pay for it all.

The reason i say this is because a company Like Dell , when you buy the Insurance through them they are computer specialists themselves so they would come round and sort it out, depending on who your insurers are and what it says in the contract between yourself, i would take it none of them are computer specialists , so they would either get a contractor to come round or send you to a computer specialist.

It could be overheating, normally when they get to a certain temperature they cut out for safety reasons... It's best to have the laptop so air can flow underneath it, normally propping the back end up where the fans are does the trick :)

crampo - there are no installed antivirus on it - i just used the online scanners as advised on here (online scanners thread).....oh - he keeps ccleaner on it and uses it when remembers.....but nothing much needed to be cleaned...

when you mentioned taking it somewhere i thought you meant me pay - sorry,,, yes ive had to take my daughters laptop to currys once to be mended so understand thats how most work....as it was bought at comet i think domestic and general will tell me to take it there yes....

jaffa - like me - my son just pops the laptop on his lap and uses it that way so am sure air can flow ok??

    thanks all....do appreciate your help...x

for the air flow , not really , as most laptops have a grills underneath and at the side for hot air to escape as such, you can buy laptop coolers for about £20 uses usb to power and it props it up abit , helps airflow alo

Lappies can get uber toasty especially those with AMD processors. It could be that your blocking the fan intake on the bottom corner with your leg... you say it can go days and then suddenly go off and that matches overheating symptoms
