EVERYONE IN WALES WITH MORE THAN 3 KIDS UNDER 19 TAKE NOTE Just found out that if you live in Wales (or have Welsh Water Bill), claiming Working Tax Credit or Child Tax Credit (amongst other benefits) and have 3 or more kids under 19 in FT education, you can claim a Welsh Water Assist Tariff on your water bill - which means about a £250 water bill (ours is currently over £400! - saving about £170 a year!). Ring Welsh Water on 0800 052 0138 to get more info
I don't know how long they have offered this discount but I only found out thanks to a friend of mine passing it on to me. Looking at my bill it does say something about Welsh water Assist but then mentions if you are on "certain" benefits - I assumed it meant benefits like DLA or Income Support but it also includes WTC and CTC - that'll teach me not to investigate further!

I think most water companies offer a scheme like this.
Bristol Water call it WaterSure and advertise it is for "vulnerable customers". This probably puts loads of people off from actually reading the criteria.0 -
I live in Cardiff by myself in a flat. Owned by a housing association. At the start of this month my water bill increased from £18 per month to £32. After phoneing up several times and being told rather rudley that they can't send someone round to show me how to use water I found out that the price had increased from £1.30 per cubic met to £1.36 Now I know that a single person uses about 6o tons of water a year so my bill is going to be around £320. This seems like an awful lot to me as there is a family of three, a few houses down that pay £38 per month. This family is on a flat rate with out a water meter. I have a meter and was under the impression that you pay for what you use. Could anyone suggest anything? there seems to be no one to contact and they refuse to come out unless there is a leak. This seems to be what you have to pay in Wales but I don't know how they can justify charging that much.0

I managed to get throught to someone from Welsh Water who knew what they were on about. I phoned this number 0800 052 0140. The bloke who answered looked at my water useage and calculated the right amount so my bill should be £23 per month. Phone that number if you think you are being over charged0
