Buyer emailed to say can't pay for 10 days

I have just sold a phone for a friend on ebay. The buyer has emailed me after the auction to say that they don't get paid for 10 days, but they still want the phone and so will pay for it then . The buyer only has a feedback of 3.
I emailed them to say that they really should have advised me that the couldn't afford to pay straight away before bidding and that I would check with my friend whether he was happy to wait for payment.
Should he give them the benefit of the doubt and wait for payment?

They were under no obligation to say beforehand and I've been in this very same situation before.

They have, under ebay rules, 7 days to pay before a dispute can be opened against them so you'll just have to wait and then relist if need be.

That seems a bit rude of the buyer, as I *think* when you click comfirm bid, it sais something like 'you are entering into a legally binding contract, and as such must be able to pay' or something along those lines. You may be able to offer it to another bidder if you don't want to wait aswell, but as another has said, if they don't pay within 7 days, you can open a dispute and get your fees back.

If you offer it as a 2nd chance, and then 10 days later the original buyer pays you're behind the 8 ball and will find yourself with a big fat neg'

I appreciate they were not under any obligation to advise that they couldn't pay straight away, but it would have been corteous bearing in mind they were asking me to wait longer than 7 days for payment.

My firend who I am selling for says he is prepare dto wait so I guess the best thing to do is give the buyer the benfit of the doubt and then lodge a dispute if they don't pay in 10 days time.

Perhaps, but maybe the original buyer doesn't leave feedback... seeing as the OP said he only had 3, maybe he doesn't bother. I know I have had people like that.

Anyway, apparently feedback doensn't matter in eBay as I was so rudely reminded in some other threads a while back...

I'd open the dispute after 7 days, just in case.

Whatever happens make sure they have photos of the phone and a note of all serial numbers and the imei number. A casual mention that it has been invisibly marked with smart water would be wise as would posting by special delivery not recorded.

Thank you, good advice. What would the best method of postage be then if it is not insured with SD?

Special delivery is the only option for postage within the UK for items over £39 unless you want to look at using a courier which will probably be dearer.

Recorded is standard post so only covers items up to £39.
