    Yes.

I reckon about 20% of my sales are now conducted this way.

And after paypal close the dispute, if the chargeback hasn't been paid, it vanishes, and the seller can carry on as before. So not a lot of protection in reality.

No its not a phone, I have bought from the seller twice before on ebay but they are having probs listing what I want to buy because I believe due to vero restrictions so I thought I could get round it by saying I'd buy off ebay. Its about £50 so will have a think about it.

    Thanks for replies.

I think as you have bought off the seller before, you should be alright. There isn't anything to stop you being scammed, but if you feel you can trust the seller, and they have a good eBay feedback rating, then I think you should be alright.

Sorry to bring this thread up again, but I registered just to ask the same thing as the OP.. except from the seller's perspective. I'm selling a phone on Craigslist ($150+) and said in the ad I'd accept paypal, someone contacts me saying he wants to buy it immediately and I sent him a payment request.

But now I'm starting to get worried. Is it possible for him to scam me if he sends payment through transfer (not credit card)? I gather I should withdraw the funds as soon as I get them to prevent some kind of chargeback from dispute in case he tells paypal he didn't get the item. And I know to check payment confirmation directly from paypal.com, because he might send me a look-alike email confirmation.

This probably sounds weird for the seller to be worried about fraud, but I know it happens. What do you folks think?

I know this is not ebay but this thread might be useful:

I am concerned that you talk in dollars though, for clarity so we can give the correct advice can you confirm whether you are in the UK or the US and where the phone is going?

If you are in the UK and the buyer is abroad then if you follow the link I gave you'll see you may well have problems purely as this is a phone and therefore not insured to go outside the UK.

Yes, I am in the US, and I am aware that phones only operate with specific networks. But I just found out he was a scammer. He sent me this email a few minutes ago:

    "Hi x,
i will like to inform you that the payment has been made for the purchased item and i am sure PayPal has sent you the confirmation email for the payment and i will like you to follow all protocols as regards the payment and get back to their member care by sending
the necessary details of the shipment to them so that they can verify it and credit your account afterward... Furthermore,I will like the item shipped via USPS Global Express Mail (EMS SPEED POST) for a fast and cheap shipment, and the label number must start with
    EB, EQ, EH,EB,EM

Here is the Shipping Address Below?

    Charles Benson
    Road 21 New Wire&Cable Apata
    Ibadan,Oyo-State
    23402,Nigeria

Kindly get back to me ASAP
Its nice doing business with you
    Regards"

And then he sent me a look-alike email from a fake paypal address with confirmation of payment--overpayment, actually, by $100. I logged into my paypal account to check, and nothing!

Glad I didn't fall for it. Be careful, folks!
