Thanks for the link to the coleslaw recipe. I've been experimenting with different recipes for coleslaw dressing as I eat loads of coleslaw. I'll probably tinker with it a bit to get it to suit my palate - seems like a lot of sugar - but still very grateful that you linked to it :T

you'll find the missing pics on her blog ;)

For my birthday my wonderful, wonderful husband has agreed to buy me a Food Processor for my birthday. I've seen them used in 30 Minute Meals etc and I'm so excited to own one, but it's not something that I, or my family, are used to.

Do you own a food processor and what is it most useful for?

(I know, not really MSE but I'm hoping it will encourage me to cook more food from scratch (especially pastry), and also eat healthier - I think it will make preparing stir fries much better!

These are exactly the reasons why I bought a kenwood chef recently. The time savings mean I cook more since I got it, so it's working out well. Pretty much everything I make now from lemonade to cakes, pastry, curry and bread uses it.

The food processor attachment has a thick slicing metal drum, so I can cut vegetables and slice cheese really quickly. The grating drum gets used often to grate cheese and make breadcrumbs. Being able to chop/grate everything in a few seconds saves a lot of time and effort. I also have the blender attachment, whisk, k-beater and dough hook.

It's not directly money saving, I bought second hand and the total with all attachments and delivery to my house was about £80, which I appreciate is a lot of money to spend on one appliance. It's been worth it though, it makes cooking so much more efficient. I'm so busy with project stuff that I need the time more and as an alternative to buying more ready made things it's saving money.

The sugar could easily be halved and next time I make it I will do. It does taste sweet but was very good - like a proper coleslaw (err, obviously I suppose!) but I would say the one "flaw" was that it was a bit watery and not very rich. Which suits me actually as I'd quite like to eat coleslaw for the veg, and not for the creamy sauce - I'm bad enough with desserts as it is! :D

Thanks so much for the link - is she on MSE?

Reminds me of this book http://www.amazon.co.uk/Fays-Family-Food-Delicious-Everyone/dp/0718154606 where she harps on about "the holy trinity" for Italian sauces - the carrots, the celery and the onion base.

Definitely going to make this veggie hash!

    Hi MaggieBaking,
I too received a Kenwood FP for my birthday last month. Love it - especially now I can make pizza dough in no time. Apart from slicing veggies, I have also blitzed rolled oats to make HM readybrek & to add to my hm granola mix - at least half the cost of store's own or branded. I haven't tried pastry yet but that is on my agenda for next month.
    When I grow up I want to be a M.S.E.!! :D

Sounds like fun! This link to thriftladys vegetable hash may be useful :)

Yes Jamie uses his a lot - especially for salads etc. It just depends on what you eat how much you use it. He does encourage it a lot in the 30 min series

I dont think i could wait for Mid july he he he!

I remember this discussion when it was still fresh! It made me run out and buy a food processor because the advice I picked up made me think I was about to experience a rebirth and turn into a proper housewife who does housewifey things. That was "a number" of years ago. I have never opened the box! Actually I did take it (in its box) out from under the stairs and put it on the kitchen table (which I don't use) to open "later". The cats love sitting on it. However they managed to move the table out from the wall a bit and the food processor (still in its protective box) landed on the floor. I pushed the table back to its rightful place. The cats still sit on the food processer in its box, but under the table.

(And anyone who asks how carefully I mop under the table is not going to get a polite answer...............)
