Hi
Well an update...I saw some great ideas both on here and on the Special Occasions board and made up my mind to do something personal. Then in half term OH came home for R&R from Afghanistan and bought some lovely Pashmina shawls for me that cost him $3 each!! So I told him when he went back to buy 11 and post them back to me. They arrived this week although they aren't Pashminas...!! They are more a Sarong type of thing!!! Still they are lovely and I've bought some gift bags and the children have been writing cards this weekend and have enjoyed putting the pressies together. They break up from school this week so the scarves came just in time!Debtfree JUNE 2008 - Thank you MSE:T0 -
What about making this? I did it for a few years for my kids teachers inspired by these photos and I put the contents into a box and the teachers loved it!

As a teacher, the things I appreciate the most are the cards/letters/messages from students and parents. They're the things I still have down the line. If you definitely want to give gifts, I would suggest some special stationery!! Lovely pens, a notebook etc or a mug. Flowers/pot plant or choc equally welcome but you tend to get a LOT of these at once. One gift I treasure is a Smart Mug- it's a coffee filter in a mug- about 6 quid on ebay and I use it EVERY day to save me from naff coffee!
Hope this helps,

I have thought to steal an idea that I saw in 'Come dine with me' of all things. One of the contestants arrived with a colander filled with compost and herbs- like the ones you get from the supermarket.
I thought that was a fab idea - not trinkety, useful and not a waste.
What do you think? I told a friend recently and she fell about laughing - I am beginning to have second doubts! You could make it look morre fancy by tying cellophane around it (but is going against a bit of my green credentials!)

How about giving a retro sweet hamper?
At Christmas our office recieved one full of nostalgic sweets...
Dip Dabs, Sherbet Fountain, Caramac bar, Wham bar, Cola Fizz Lolly, Double Lolly, Refreshers, Fizzers, Parma Violets, Love Hearts, Pink and White Mice, Flying Saucers, Anglo Bubbly, Candy Watch, Candy Necklace, Fruit Salad Chews, Black Jack Chews, Bonbons, Mints, Humbugs, Uncle Joes Mintballs, Anissed Balls, Fizz Whizz Popping Candy, Chocolate Hearts, Coltsfoot Rock, Raspberry Ruffles, Coconut Mushrooms, Rhubarb and Custards, Dolly Mixture, Jelly Babies, Kola Kubes, Sweet Tobacco, Jelly Babies, Toasted Teacakes
Was a really fun gift, thoughtful and not too personal but got everyone talking about their favourite sweets and sweets they'd forgotten about. Good for any age too!

I agree with posters about personal letters and cards with an extra note on them. However, in spite of loving the job and some fantastic kids, the fancy mugs and picture frames etc did begin to pall.
Consumables like wine, chocs and flowers are best. I am still using the smellies I had for retirement at end of 2007!

DH and myself are both teachers, I am secondary maths (on maternity leave) and DH is primary. We would both say it is definately the thought that counts, and handmade cards, little pressies are the best. And SO appreciated.
If you are looking to buy something though, my DH received an Oxfam card after his first year from a student who had paid for a school in Africa to recieve 500 (I think!) pencils on DH's behalf. Student had written 'thought this would be a bit different than a bottle of wine!' in the card.
DH still says it was the best present he has ever got from a student (with a close second being his prized Top Gear mug )
