Thanks so much everyone, it does help to hear this. I know we couldn't have done anything else. He was a rescue dog about 3 or 4 when we got him 12 years ago, so he was a good age. He never put a foot wrong, bless him, just settled into our home and hearts. He was fine until yesterday when his back legs just wouldn't work, that's what was so hard, at the front end he was still the same old Barnaby. Even the vet was in tears because he licked her hand as she shaved his leg. We will get another eventually, it's been nearly 30 years since we were without having a dog, there's one out there somewhere that needs us.Luck is believing you’re lucky – Tennessee Williams

Sue - that sounds like what happened with our cat - he was 17 and we'd lost his brother the year before (fell asleep and didn't wake up). He had some sort of fit/stroke and his hind legs weren't working, two hours previously he'd been sitting out the front in the sunshine waiting for us to come home from school....very upsetting but wouldn't have wanted him to suffer and possibly be in pain.
(((more hugs)))

A family friend lost they dog yesterday and they are taking it badly also... my Mum lost her Poodle just a few weeks ago but she now has a new dog called Sophie, a ShihTzu who is three years old... she was used for breeding and had her third litter about 3 months ago but was not needed anymore, so my Mum took her in... she is a lovely gentle dog and perfect for my Mum, its nice to see her out walking her a few times a day again as she was so lonely after losing her poodle.... I am sure there is a dog somewhere that needs your love too....

Sophie looks gorgeous, there's no doubt we will get another, I think it's a big compliment to any animal that they leave such a gaping hole that you have to fill it.Luck is believing you’re lucky – Tennessee Williams

Chris, thank you, the last thing that I said to Barnaby was give our love to Deefer and Gemma, they were our last 2 dogs. Someone on here has the signature, 'If dogs don't go to Heaven, I want to go where they go' I second that.Luck is believing you’re lucky – Tennessee Williams
