Sue, when my candy was in her final year we was asked to rehome another cocker spaniel, I am really glad I did as it helped me when we had to have her put down, since then we have rehomed another. I would not be without my babies.

Thanks so much everyone, it does help to hear this. I know we couldn't have done anything else. He was a rescue dog about 3 or 4 when we got him 12 years ago, so he was a good age. He never put a foot wrong, bless him, just settled into our home and hearts. He was fine until yesterday when his back legs just wouldn't work, that's what was so hard, at the front end he was still the same old Barnaby. Even the vet was in tears because he licked her hand as she shaved his leg. We will get another eventually, it's been nearly 30 years since we were without having a dog, there's one out there somewhere that needs us.

    (((hugs)))

Sue, I'm sat here with tears rolling down my face and my eyes sting. We had to do exactly the same thing last June for Zak, our dear old Shepherd cross, he was nearly 15. His back legs went too, you brought all back when you mentioned shaving Barnaby's leg. I sympathsise and emphasise hun, it does get easier in time but then you have a moment like this and it hurts just as much all over again. Hope no one minds me showing a piccy of him with the youngsters just two weeks before he left us.

Sue if you just want to sound off feel free to pm me xxx

Nicky what a lovely picture, the one on the right looks very like Barnaby, he was a Collie cross and had all of the markings but was short coated. This is him:

By the edge of a wood at the foot of a hill,
is a lush green meadow, where time stands still,
where the friends of man and women do run,
when their time on earth is over and done,
for here between this world and the next,
is a place where each beloved creature finds rest,
on this golden lad they wait and play,
till the rainbow bridge they cross over one day,
no more do they suffer in pain or in sadness,
there limbs are restored, their health renewed,
their bodies have healed with strengh imbued,
they romp through the grass without even a care,
until one day they stop and sniff the air,
all ears !!!!! forward, eyes dart front and back,
then all of a sudden one breaks fromthe pack,
for just at that instant their eyes have met,
    together again,both person and pet,
so they run to each other, these friends from long past,
the time of their parting is over at last,
the sadness they felt while they were apart,
has turned into joy once more in each heart.

Thank you for that laney, loads more tears , but I had seen that years ago and couldn't remember what it was called. It's beautiful, and I hope with everything that I have that it's true.
