I was expecting a phone call too.... however, the new account appeared on my Co-op online page within a couple of days....and I did not get a phone call.....

In fact, as I said above, the account was set up so quickly it even beat their computer system, which sent out a standard refusal letter... received a couple of days after I had seen the account online.......Co-op can be quite a funny bunch at times.....and I don't mean that in a nasty way at all...very human lot...

did you ask for an 'appeal' to that decision?

or did you just leave things be?

    No, I didn't appeal, I didn't know I could to be honest.

I find when applying for services such as these, to pre-warn the advisor of the BR [as-was], they should then inform the applicant of any appeal process....

I note a number of folk, for example, when dealing with Letting Agents, pre-warning of the BR status, which either saves wasting time, or leads to a by-passing of procedures.

I followed Alisdair's advice and on Thursday 19th and applied for a Smartsaver, explained I was a Discharged BR and could they put application to appeal after rejection. Well today I now have a lovely Smartsaver opened on my Online Banking along side my Cashminder!

    Well done Co-Op and thank's again Alisdair:T:T

Thats great news on you opening one, but having had a look at the interest rates it only pays 0.25% were the YBS one pays 2.10% so while if you have a co op current account I can see the advantage of having one, from an interest point of view YBS is by far the best and easier to apply for. ie. online rather than phone, appeal etc

That's true John and I do have the YBS one also, in fact if my memory serves me well I told everyone about that one back in March 2009:) This Smartsaver is good for short term savings and easy to manage with my Cashminder !

It always makes me feel good when someone recommends the YBS:T

Rest of my life I see how it would be an advantage, having a co op account myself I feel I will open one again as like others it got closed on notification of bankruptcy. It does feel good to have savings now and know if i want anything then I have to save to get it. I dont even want to get a credit card to help rebuild my credit history as I think it will be a good many years yet before i even think about needing to do that.

    hi, well done...

I initially enquired about opening yet another Cashminder account, to simply put surplus cash into, away from other accounts, yet accessible when needed.

The Smartsaver was recommended because of its accessibility online...instant transfers, as against having to wait for several days...[or even a week or so if the bank holidays fall wrong]..........as I do with my Post Office online savings account...

I even have a cash point card with Smartsaver....so if I go off on a trip, I can instantly access my savings should the need arise....

downside is....yet another PIN number to remember

  • I opened my coop bank account a month before going BR but did advise them it was going to happen. When speaking to a telephone advisor about 3months later i was offered an isa, i advised i was BR and they said i could still apply, this was rejected. 6 m after going BR i was in a branch and was again asked if i wanted a savings account/ isa, i advised that id previously been rejected, i was advised they would apply again as they felt id be approved, i was so now i have a coop ISA. I also have a ybs savings account too.
im discharged on Friday so hoping to clear my file and maybe apply for a capital 1 card to build my credit history again.

I tried again after posting on this thread for a smart saver and was refused.

Rang Co-op to ask about appealing and was told to put it in writing, or I could try over the phone for an ISA.

Just logged onto my online banking and the ISA has been set up!

    I'm a happy bunny now :)
