No I can't hear any ticking noises.

That sounds straight forward enough. Could you recommend any websites where I could get the hard drive please? I don't have any info on the motherboard and would need to just tell them the model number - will they know which one I need?

Thanks ever so much for the advice I thought my poor laptop was destined for the scrap heap!

    ebuyer, scan, amazon etc.

There are 2 types, pata and sata, you need the correct one.

But before you go spending money, does the bios not recognise it as being there at all? Are you able to take it out, and reseat it, often under a flap on the bottom, but RM may do things differently

Do you have a licence sticker for windows, and a CD/DVD available

I need to buy a little screwdriver tomorrow, I can't undo the screws to check the hard drive. It's saying in BIOS 'HDD: none'.

I have a licence sticker but no disc, I bought the laptop off someone a while ago.

See if you can change non to auto, or similar.

If you know anyone with the same operating system, you could borrow their disk.

I've just removed the hard drive and reinserted it and it's still not recognising it. I can't change it from none to auto in BIOS, when I try and click on ot nothing happens.

you cannot click in a bios, you have to look at the controls listed at the bottom of the screen (ie. f10 to save & exit, page up/PG up, page down/pg dn) to select options

It does let me click on some things but I can't see an option anywhere to change HDD from none to auto.

Under main, devices, does it detect a hard disk? eg HDD xxGB

Have you tried pressing enter when none is highlighted?

Hard disk needs to be selected as 1st/2nd or 3rd boot device on the boot menu

Under main devices it says 'HDD (PM) = None'

I've highlighted it on the boot menu too.

The bios on most laptops will be locked anyway. The changes you can make are minimal. It should pick a new hdd up automaticaly though if you pop a new one in there.
