    Good responses everyone.

Every other thread on home buying asks "How much lower than the asking price should I offer" and then someone gets the hump because their offer is accepted and then someone else decides it is worth more to them.

The agent has done nothing wrong here. Get over it.

You cant blame the estate agent its the vendor, i dont like estate agents and even i can see that.

Having said that i have looked at a house by me thats a repo, its well below asking price, when i asked the estate agent they said a offer had been accpeted and it was a lot higher than the asking price, i think a lot of estate agents do have back handers.

I know a former estate agent who told me its common to get back handers from people buying, to ensure no more offers are made.

I took my house off the market with an agent - which might indicate that it had sold ... and somebody who had seen it for sale and wanted it, then saw it had been taken off the market, knocked on my door to try to buy it.

    The EA's done nothing wrong.

When a house is on the market there will be all sorts of people that either view it, or plan to view it ... in fact when I changed agents, Agent1 provided a list of my viewers to pass to Agent2 so that if any of their viewers bought the house within 6 months Agent1 would get the commission, even if the buyer had contacted Agent2 subsequent to their initial visit.

    Absolute and utter rubbish.

After 40 years in the business, I know a lot of agents, and I do not know what you are talking about. It is NOT common but there may the odd rogue as there is in the rest of life.

Just make a larger offer, get the other party to keep bidding up,run it to the wire, then drop it.

    How satisfying would that be?

That is such a dumb post. Grow up!!!

I feel they are absolute scum and am considering giving up buying all together!

You may indeed not be cut out for this. Maybe you should move to Scotland, where a deal is a deal. OTOH, in Scotland you need to do much more preparatory work before making the offer.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

Probably why he/she's a former EA. You wouldn't stay in business long if you started that crud. Not to mention the fact that, with repos, there's an awful lot of paperwork and auditing, so the vendor (mortgage co. or more specifically their agent) would find out that other offers had been made. They also "mystery shop" to make sure that repos are still being marketed.
