Okay, the deed is done! Need to now work out the details. E.g how long to stay in Bangkok for before moving on to Koh Samui where we are spending the bulk of our time in Lamai, then off to Krabi (?), then Phuket and then back to Bangkok.

Thinking of doing the bus+boat from Bangkok to Koh Samui or am I mad? Will be checking out the New Siam 2 as mentioned.

So excited, can't quite believe I have just booked the tickets. My DD is non-plussed to tell the truth, typical 8.5yr old, just thinks none of it is a big deal lol

Please DON'T even think about doing the Bus/Boat combination to Samui if you love your child. :)

At worst, you can do the Combo ticket with the overnight train. You'll have a a bed.

For the train, 628 and 678 baht for upper and lower bunks respectively, plus another 250 baht each for the bus/boat from Surat Thani to Samui.

If you want to mix convenience with adventure, fly to Surat Thani with Air Asia for 1290 baht each and then take the bus/boat package from there.

Do just take the cheapest option. Remember that it's an adventure, not torture.

Donnie, just tried to book rooms at New Siam (good reviews on Trip Advisor) but can't more than 90days in advance, so will try again in a couple of days. It is 840Bhat for a double+air con which is great for my budget.

You don't happen to know suggestions of accomodation in Koh Samui do you?

I'm reluctant to recommend much to do with Samui as the place is a relative disappointment to me.

Used to be amazing and now it's a tourist destination.

I utilise a beachfront bungalow on Chaweng Beach when I'm there. 1500 baht

If you can bear to walk another ten metres to the beach you will pay less. No pool.

What did you have in mind?

Donnie, there are no enough superlatives to describe how helpful your assistance is. Bless you!

Okay, the more I post and read, the more I realise that not many are enamoured with Samui - I have no problem leaving it out of the itinerary. I am more than happy spending the bulk of our time in Phuket/Krabi and that side of the Country.

Re New Siam, I have to confess that after having a look on Trip Advisor after my last post, I became enamoured with Baan Sukhumvit Inn Soi 18 and booked us in there instead for the first 4 nights. Sounds lovely and a great start to the holiday :j

Some of Samui is nice. We stayed at Lamai, and thought it was OK. Maenam was nice - very quiet and laid back. Bophut was the nicest place we stayed. It has a great seaside resort feel about it. It's not too busy, and has lots of nice restaurants with all price ranges. We had a great meal in the Italian there and it was £30 for 2 of us - the most expensive meal we've had in Thailand! We stayed at 'The Lodge' (https://www.lodgesamui.com) which was fantastic, right on the beach.
We did prefer Krani though. It had better beaches, scenery and there seems more to do and explore.
