To 3 or not to 3?

Hoping to pick your brains on what you think of this dilemma!:D
My OH currently has an iphone on O2 PAYG. He's sick to the back teeth of this tempremental, jumped up mp3 player & is debating which phone to get next.
He's a heavy texter & browser so this deal with the E71 from 3 seemed v good;(too good?!)
http://threestore.three.co.uk/dealsummary.aspx?offercode=18UT20D090
£20 is what he's paying now on PAYG with web bolt ons so he figures, 'what the heck?' Just a couple of things he's quibbling about;
If he loses his job, where does he stand if he can't afford the monthly payments?
Is this phone as good as it seems?
If we went into the 3 shop, what are the chances they would do a deal for two of these phones on contract? I've always loved the look of this phone & wouldn't mind joining him, but currently pay £10 MAX on O2 PAYG & couldn't afford the extra £10 so a deal would have to be done.
Is there anything else that should be considered with regards to 3 contracts? We have had no dealings with them so no idea of any issues people may have had with them.
Many thanks in advance for any help/advice you can give us!:D

1) It is tough luck if he looses his job, he still has to pay for his contract and it WILL be passed to a debt collection agency after three or four months. You can't downgrade the tariff.
2) The phone is fantastic - have a look on Google for some reviews
3) Highly unlikely they will do a deal, it is already a VERY cheap tariff for what you get. Certainly not halving it to £10 a month for you! Are you sure you couldn't afford the extra £2.50 per week more for unlimited calls and texts between the two of you (you get this on that tariff)?
4) Lots of people complain about 3, but lots of people coplain about other networks too. I haven't had a problem with multiple contacts over a five year period with 3.0 -
I have an Iphone on O2 and an E71 on Three.
For browsing the E71, in my opinion is not even close to the Iphone. However it is an excellent phone for texting and generally I find it excellent if you don't want all the gadgets that the Iphone provides.
As for 3. I get excellent network coverage and they are cheap. So long as nothing goes wrong, I find them hard to beat. Where they fall down massively is customer service. It is abysmal. Most of them just don't have a clue. However with persistance you will get somebody to help. I've had multiple contracts with them in the past and only minor issues.LBM : March 2008

3 might offer you the deal where you will both get unlimited 3 to 3 calls if you take both handsets at the same time0

That is already included on the tariff they are talking about as I said in post #2.0 -
I would ask local friends if they are on 3 and how is reception as I have just left a 3 contract midway due to little to no reception and my sister a few miles away is having the same problems too, the latest excuse my sisters had was there seems to be problems with the G postcode area ie the whole of glasgow and those surrounding areas of glasgow with a G postcode customer service dont seem to be much help just seem to always pass the complaint onto the next level but as mentioned there are a load of happy people on 3 who dont have these problems so best check with friends before commiting to an 18 month contract. The more i save the more i can spend:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:0

Good idea, unfortunately we don't know anyone on 3! We are well aware of the network coverage issues & that's a major concern.
OH is still undecided. He thought about going to O2, showing them the deal on 3 & seeing if they will offer something similar if he switches from PAYG to contract. I told him that was doubtfull as their contract tarrifs seem extortionate in comparison to everyone else & the handsets offered are limited to say the least.0 -
I just ordered an O2 E71 with terms very similar to the 3 deal (but 600 mins + 1000 texts) but they chucked in my home broadband.
My motto is - If you don't ask, you don't get. Phone 202 and ask to talk to upgrades0 -

But is it still classed as an upgrade if you are going from PAYG to contract?0 -
I would certainly class that as an upgrade if your're moving from PAYG with no commitment to an 18Mths contract and paying steady line rental. Its continuous revenue for them.
I would consider any contract changes to be an upgrade also...be it a change of tariff or handset.0
