Can You Cancel A Contract Before It's Due?

We have T-Mobile USB internet 2 year contract (about 9 months into it) and we also have 3g USB internet with Laptop (6 months in).

They are driving me mad, we got them because we were desperate for a laptop as ours broke, and also we thought USB internet would be great as you can use it anywhere.

Because we have very very bad credit rating it is in my MIL's name and address, with our address added onto the account.

My question is... is there anyway possible I can cancel it without having to pay the remaining amount then owed? I understand with 3g I would have to give the laptop back, as I am presuming it is not "yours" until the end of the contract?

But due to the "fair usage limit" I am being charged an extra £40 each month because they say I am over my usage.. yet I do not download things online, and I use the t-mobile lots more even though its slower than 3g in fear of being charged, but yet I get charged anyway :(

I want to go to normal internet... and get away from USB but I am stuck in a silly contract.

ANY advice very much appreciated x

yes, you can cancel - but expect to pay back about 15 months worth of subscription at the same time.... it's called a contract for a reason as you agreed to stay with them for 2 years - there's no way they will let you leave for nothing unless the service never worked, which it has - its not T-Mobile's problem that your laptop broke prior to joining, nor is it their fault that you go over your data tariff.

With regards to downloading things... you are always downloading.... whether you look at your email, look at a website, watch video on YouTube, listen to online radio, update Windows, etc etc - that counts as downloading

.. yet I do not download things online

Any use of the internet counts towards your allowance...loading your homepage is "downloading" watching a youtube clip is "downloading".....

Mobile internet is very, very expensive, but I'm afraid you have a contract (well, 2) and you're probably stuck with them :(

That "free" Laptop has to be paid for by someone... :(

  • the laptop does work. its just silly that i rarely use it but get charged so much. i would not use it at all if t-mobile was reliable. i have tried using t mobile today and it has disconnected every 5 seconds... which is quite irritating when you are paying to use the internet.

  • data with 3g i think i will be paying for the contract but not using it, then really its just like i am paying mothly for my laptop (which is rubbish grr).
do t-mobile have an obligation to give you a usable service?

You can't possibly be 'rarely using it' if they are charging you £40 a month over your data limit. How many GB per month are you going over? You either need to cut your usage, or increase your tarriff so you get the additional GB at a lower rate, rather than paying the rip-off penalty rate when you go over the monthly limit.
They won't let you terminate the contract and they won't let you return the laptop, secondhand it is worthless to them.
I'm afraid that most of the people on these boards who have gone for a 'free' laptop on a 24 month contract have found that is is anything but free. It's invariably cheaper to buy a laptop on credit and pay for it over two years, and then take out a broadband contract of your choice that doesn't lock you in for 2 years.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
