It is becoming clear that the £60 fine and 3 points has not been an adequate deterrent to this dangerous practice. Even on a short motorway journey you see many offenders. Some of the reckless one-handed manoeuvres are dreadful.
I believe the answer is to 'up' the penalty. A £500 fine and an automatic 28-day driving ban, properly enforced, would sort this problem out overnight. Bring it on!0 -
I agree make it a £1000 fine and an automatic 12 points on your licence.
That way you get a driving ban, have to retake your test, etc etc.
Once that gets around people will stop using the phones if they know theyll loose their licence.Ex-Employee of a Train Operating Company.

For example - http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/937288.htm ok insurance, repairs, and fuel will all cost that little more, but it's not out of reach.0 -
Actually pretty much anyone who can afford a car can afford a BMW.

If we had a BMW (even a cheap one like in that link) we could never afford the insurance or the tax, never mind the fuel too!
My OH passed his test last September and his insurance is £130 a month as it is. My mums is less than that a year! :rolleyes:0 -
I was in lane two of the M62 this afternoon bobbling along 70/75 when the ice cream van in lane 1 suddenly sweved into lane 2 about 15 feet infront of me. Luckily there was nowt in lane 3 so I was able to move over. as I got along side the ice cram van I gave a long blast of my horn and gave the spaz behind the wheel the nescafe coffee hand gesture. I was gob smacked that someone who has "Mind The Children" on the back of their van was texting at the wheel...!!!
Infact i'm going to name the soft tvvat!
