It would be classed as a cash advance and you would pay interest on it.
You are paying a bill, not purchasing anything.

I'm not sure this is correct.

I have paid my Grattan catalogue with my credit card and it was classed as a purchase. I've also paid my council tax with a credit card before, and again it was classed as a purchase.

    Check with your card provider.

    Regards

I have paid my Next Directory bill with my CC in the past (to do a debt swap and lower the APR) and it was classed as a purchase and not a cash advance.

I've paid Next before with CC as well and it was classed as purchase (but it was years ago). I also recently paid off my Mums Aqua card with my credit card (to get the cashback) and it was classed as a purchase.

I must say I'm surprised about that, I was under the impression that no credit card company would allow balances to be reduced by another credit card (except by BT of course). Was it over the phone or online?

Missyvirgo. If you pay your Directory bill by credit card, your next credit card statement will either show a payment equal to the Directory bill (purchase) or show it as a transaction or cash advance and interest applied, assuming CC statement had no previous balance c/f
AFAIKcash advance is applied to cash advances, poss currency exhanges and bets
My recurring CC for broadband, CC payments for ebay purchases via PayPal and advance charges for utilities are still regarded as purchases
