Raw food diet

kafkathecat wrote: »In my experience eating a raw food diet is more expensive than a normal diet. All the raw foodies I have known have had the diet take over their lives. They buy expensive equipment and supplements and food has become the main topic of conversation. They did all lose weight and some have looked a lot better for it. They have all reported having more energy but at least one has suffered from vitamin B12 deficiency caused by the diet.
I am personally wary of the diet because much of the 'science ' in the books is nonsense and so I find it harder to trust anything else they say. In one book I read the writer wrote approvingly of the Australian woman who claims to live on air.
I believe there are cheaper and easier ways of losing weight and improving your health and energy levels.

Don't the 'breatharians' eat cheeseburgers and chocolate, but 'just for the taste' and not for the calories (of course). I'm sure some of them have allegedly been copped at it, and been very indignant about it.0 -

If you want to read up on someone who has recorded in exhaustive detail going raw, try Steve Pavlina's blog.

I seem to remember that he went raw for a while, then came off it, but felt worse so has gone back on it. He's done interesting trials (on himself) on polyphasic sleep and other odd lifestyle choices.
His blog is huge though, but well categorised, try not to be distracted (!)

Isn't he into polyshaggery? Oh, sorry, polyamory.0

I have been reading about a mostly raw diet - about 85% plus. It sounds really interesting. I don't really have any intolerances (just fussy!) but if I eat carbs I feel really sluggish and drained. I eat carbs a lot so this is basically how I feel all the time. Crazy as I feel so much better on low carb.
Has anyone tried eating mostly raw / vegan?
I think it might be expensive and difficult in Winter.
I like the idea of having Tigger :j energy naturally and being healthy and not having to count calories would be a big benefit. I just don't know if it would be restrictive in Winter when many foods are out of season.
Not sure if frozen or canned fruit and vegetables would count and, if they don't, all that fresh food would surely cost a lot. Plus extra trips to the supermarket to get more food as it doesn't last as long.0 -
Given that we're not digestively equipped to handle cellulose (ruminants such as cattle use bacteria to break down the cells of all that grass), a lot of the nutrition in raw veg will go right through us.
One way to lose weight drastically I suppose.
I see it more as eating raw means you can't have that cake, or KFC, or meringue so you are cutting out a lot of unhealthy foods. And fruit is generally quite sugary (thinking mangoes, bananas) so you'd get a bit of a buzz from them.
Where does a raw vegan get their protein from (genuine question
)? Fat I suppose from avocados and coconut.
You could just stay low carb

Don't know about the protein! Nut butters? Nuts!?
I can't seem to stick to low carb ..... the temptations of bakeries at lunch time!
Didn't know that about cellulose. The more I read the more confused I get! Are we not designed to drink cow milk? I am sure I heard that. And I watched a programme on calorie restriction to improve health and lengthen life so that was interesting too.

Welcome to the minefield!

Milk's a funny one. We generally start off producing lactase, the enzyme needed to digest milk sugars. But only some ethnic groups evolved to keep producing that enzyme after infancy - mainly Northern Europeans I think. So levels of milk consumption and tolerance are very varied. And that's before you look at how milk from the cow is different to the pasteurised, homogenised, skimmed stuff we buy now...
I hear you on the temptations! I do best "paleo" but every now and then fall facefirst into brownies. Or ice cream. Or both
And yet I know how much better I feel before pigging out! I'll learn one day... 0 -
Stop going near bakeries and stick to low carb?
It's ridiculously expensive, I've looked at some of the recipes in the past and by golly, it's expensive. If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.0 -
Rather than going raw or vegan, which both seem a lot of bother to me, I think you would do better to cut out all refined carbohydrates from your diet. That means - no white sugar, no white bread or anything made with white flour. Instead use unrefined sugar (make sure it says the word 'unrefined' - some sugar, like demerara, is refined and then has the brown colour put back in to it!!), wholemeal bread, wholemeal flour, and also go for wholewheat pasta, and brown rice.
Unrefined carbs are a) better for you, b) more filling, so you need less, c) tastier d) don't bloat you like the refined ones do, and e) provide more fibre which helps with digestion. I could go on.No longer a spouse, or trailing, but MSE won't allow me to change my username...0
