Raw food diet

Hi all,
I've tried searching on topics about the raw food diet, but I can't seem to find any.
I'm really interested in this type of eating, and am starting to eat more and more raw foods, but was wondering if anyone here had any experience of doing it? What are/were the good points and bad points, that kind of thing.
Thanks!

There was a program on TV last week that showed eating raw carrot does not release as much beta carotene as cooked carrot. Not sure how many vegetables this applies to.0

I don't think there is much on here about eating raw as old-style tends to infer cooking! We did have a brief discussion about it on 'going vegan' thread but without too much progress. I know there are a few interested people though (including myself).
I've been doing a bit of reading online and I've found few useful discussions/sites
ani phyo - really nice raw chef with some lovely free recipes
shazzie - fairly mad sounding but again some good tips
www.veganforum.com - had a whole section of their forums devoted to raw with people talking about what they eat and why etc
www.detoxyourworld.com - shop that sells lots of helpful raw goodies like raw chocolate, almond butter etc
Also good is melomeals - not purely raw but a vegan food blog by a woman who goes through raw phases
Hope they help as a starter and I;d love to know how it goes - you should keep a blog or let us know on this thread or something!:T0 -
Thanks Twinkle_star :T, the links look really interesting.
I've bought the Raw Food Bible, and am really looking forward to reading it when it arrives.
I'm hoping to eat about 80% raw food, not only to feel better, but also to see if I can lose some weight.
Will think about the blog idea, but will pop back and let you know how it goes.

There is someone called Shazzie who has written a book about raw food, here is the link from Amazon:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Detox-Your-World-Lasting-Beautiful/dp/0954397703/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1241815421&sr=8-2
I haven't read it because I am personally not very interested in raw food (my digestion prefers mostly warm food, apart from nice side salads), but I have heard good things about this particular book.
Good luck with your dietary quest, hope this helps. Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).0 -
I mostly eat raw now (around 80%) and do feel the difference. A lot of energy for example (which for me isn't that good as due to a back condition I can't move much lol but for most people would be good). Things that can be bad is if you eat too much fruit you can get a mad sugar rush and personally I get light headed if that happens
.
I don't know what else you would like to know about it as I may be able to help you. I'm not like those on 'TheRawFoodWorld' or anything as I am not an expert but I do try my best.I am a vegan woman. My OH is a lovely omni guy

Leslie Kenton wrote several books about a raw food diet....I tried it some years ago and found that I did lose weight quite quickly but found that I ate so many salads that I got fed up preparing them and that they took a lot of time to eat...didn't feel hungry though.

I tried it once, it made me really unwell. Have you seen Leslie Kenton? To put it kindly, she does not look young for her age.0

In my experience eating a raw food diet is more expensive than a normal diet. All the raw foodies I have known have had the diet take over their lives. They buy expensive equipment and supplements and food has become the main topic of conversation. They did all lose weight and some have looked a lot better for it. They have all reported having more energy but at least one has suffered from vitamin B12 deficiency caused by the diet.
I am personally wary of the diet because much of the 'science ' in the books is nonsense and so I find it harder to trust anything else they say. In one book I read the writer wrote approvingly of the Australian woman who claims to live on air.
I believe there are cheaper and easier ways of losing weight and improving your health and energy levels.

You might get a better response in the Health and Beauty board as there are lots of diet threads in there.A little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men

Thank you to all who replied

Kafka - I know exactly what you mean, and I do read the literature about the diet with some scepticism - I'm not convinced that the diet can do all that it claims either.
I suppose I just want to try it to see if I can feel better, but I'm under no illusions that I will ever be able to go 100% raw - mainly because I would miss cooked food, and there's only so many salads a girl can eat! Also, I'm just too busy to always be thinking ahead
.
I'll still have a crack and see how it goes - and if I lose weight in the meantime, it'll be no bad thing!0
