One of the current problems (engine noise) has been found to be transmission.
This has been making a noise for a couple of years, so I think I've used up any "borrowed time"

To rebuild the gearbox is about £500.
The juddering noise on turning is something to do with the power steering.

Gievnt the other problems, age (19 years) and general condition, we don't think it's worth keeping the car so I'm scrapping it today (MOT rund out Friday and don't have time to mess around with ebay).

Short term I won't be doing anything as it's summer and we have 2 motorbikes and another car, so we'll see how it goes on one car and how many issues we have.

    Thanks for all your comments.
