What food to take on plane

Heading to Egypt in a couple of weeks, and didn't opt for the in-flight meals (far too pricey for what you get!)
Does anyone have any recommendations for what to take on the plane with us? either shop bought of from home.
Anyone know if Glasgow airport boots sell sandwiches and the like?
and if Hurghada airport would have some place similar?
thanks.

perhaps to be on the safe side make some up yourself.
i'm always a big fan of cereal bars. small, tasty and most of all filling!0 -
I always book the plane food because I'm on holiday and because it always guarantees us sitting together as they allocate the dining passengers in a group to make it easier to serve the meals.

Surely that depends what you like to eat?
I always take sandwiches, crisps, cereal bars and a couple of bits of fruit (non-messy stuff, so oranges are out...), but lots of other people take pasta salads, tagines, even roasted chickens. Whatever you'd take on a picnic really. Just remember that liquids are out, so no tubs of hummous, etc., and you'll want either to buy a drink airside or remember to take an empty water/juice bottle through (if you declare it as empty it's allowed) to fill up with water in the bathrooms. Airport prices are fairly high so I almost always take my own stuff.0 -
Are you allowed to take the drinks from the meal deal on the plane? We fly from Birmingham next week and there is a Boots there but as I haven't flown in over 20 years I'm not sure of the procedure and don't want kids moaning at me that they need a drink .0

yes there is no problem with taking on board any liquids once you are airport side of security."Man invented language to satisfy his deep need to complain."

This is the important bit. You can take anything you like on the plane, as long as you've bought it airside (between the frisk area and the boarding gate). I don't know if there's a Boots at Birmingham (though it would surprise me if there weren't) but there will definitely be somewhere you can buy a drink. Alternatively, as suggested above, take an empty bottle (make sure you declare it at security but if it's empty it'll be fine) to fill up in the bathroom once you're through - that's the MSE way!0 -
In addition to the above - Jelly babies are GREAT when travelling - lots of runners use them as an instant energy boost - they slip into your bag, are cheap if you get them on one of the many deals the supermarkets do on them, keep for ages if you don't need them, and, best of all, if you get the other side, just when the bus/ferry/other passengers who haven't shown up delay your onward journey and you're all about to expire from exhaustion/hunger/irritation, THAT'S the moment to produce the bag of jelly babies - but eke them out - they may have to last several hours!!Reason for edit? Can spell, can't type!0

Have a meal in the airport before you go to the gate, and don't bother to take anything on the plane except some water.
Surely you can go without eating for 4 hours.0
