Ebay seller advice, deal or no deal?

Having had a bit of a clear out lately i have sold or listed a fair few items of clothing. I always inspect them clearly and if they even have the tineist mark on them i say that in the listing.
Anyway i sold a top which was a delicate material, and the buyer says one of the threads are broken. Including postage the item was less than £5.
I offered her to send the item back to me and i can give her a full refund...but she says she doesnt see the point and wants to do a deal with another of my items for sale.
Any advice appreciated please. I am not sure what kind of deal she is wanting so i am waiting on reply from her.
How would i stand if she wanted another of my items and wanted to keep the top then filed for a paypal chargeback for the first item?
I have never had this before so not sure what to do.
TIA

You could email her and say it's not allowed under EBay rules?I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Old style MoneySaving boards.

Agreed with above, I would not do this at all. You sort out items on an individual basis IMHO. Anything else is just asking for problems.
Ask for photos of the damage and offer a small partial refund if you agree on the damage? Otherwise wait for her to claim via PP and then she will have to return it.2 angels in heaven :A0 -

It was a crochet style top so it was a very delicate type of material and apparantly one thread is broken, in the previous message to her i offered her a refund of the item cost if she wanted to keep the top or a full refund if she wanted to return the top.
Thanks for the advice, i just wasnt sure if this was 'normal' ebay practice under the circumstances as i have never had this before and wondered what the best way round this would be.
I agree i would prefer to sort it out on a one item basis otherwise could open a whole can of worms.
How does the paypal chargeback system work? how does she start it? Would it go against my feedback if she opened one up? would she get the refund from paypal before returning it or do i have to mark as item has been returned before she gets a refund. I am happy to refund her if she sends the item back but its just she doesnt appear keen to do such and is wanting to keep the top and do this 'deal'. Do paypal make her return the item? how does that work?
Also i have had a reply regarding the 'deal' and what she wants to do is for me to sell one of my other listings at the start price going down the end listing sell to bidder route or something like that...not too sure what she means. Think this is best avoided though.

Hi thanks for your reply, just wondering if you happened to know which section under ebay rules this is mentioned as i have searched for deal and i cannot find such. Its just so i can say to the buyer and copy the relevant rules section to her.

I don't think what she is asking is against ebay rules entirely, as in ending an item early and selling it to her for a cheap price, but the reason she wants to do it is very questionable. You really shouldn't sell something on the basis of sorting out a problem with another sale.
If I were you (only my opinion) I would re-iterate your generous refund offer, but say this is the only avenue you will go down, no deals etc. If she then wants to go down a claim route it is up to her to open one etc, I certainly would never suggest she does that however.
As a buyer she could leave you a neg feedback, and you can do nothing to stop that if she is so minded.
If she does open a claim with paypal I believe that they will make her send the item back, by not giving her a refund until she enters a valid tracking number for it and you confirm you have it back.
I hope I have got all this correct and good luck.2 angels in heaven :A0 -

Thanks for your great advice...i dont know where i would be without it. I have sent an ebay message offering full refund of initial cost paid (item plus P P) if she sends item back or a full item cost refund (excluding PP) if she wants to keep the top. Just waiting on a reply now. Will let you know the outcome...
Also how would i know if she opened up a paypal chargeback? Surely if i refunded her the full cost she couldnt open up a paypal chargeback in addition and get refunded twice??0 -
If she opened a paypal claim paypal will e-mail you.
However, i'm not sure how it works if you just refunded her without going through PP, wether she could then try it on and claim via PP anyway, i'm sure that your buyer isn't trying to scam you in anyway though so hopefully this won't happen.
Maybe someone else can help a bit further.2 angels in heaven :A0 -

I would refund her via paypal which was the original method, but was just wondering if i refunded her could she do a paypal chargeback in addition and get twice the refund back. Guessing she wouldnt be allowed to do that. I not meaning she will be trying to scam, just wondering where i stand if she sets up a chargeback and i refund her would double payments come off or what would be first. I said i will refund her when i receive item. Is that normal practice? I wouldnt be expected to refund before she has returned item right?
She replied saying she will send the top back for a full refund but she didnt sound v pleased so i presume she will prob neg me regardless.

Ok, so shes sending it back, when you get it, check it over first, make sure there is no malicious damage etc (although there is not much you can do about it if there is I dont think) then do the refund via the refund button on Paypal.
Then there is no way she can do a chargeback cos you have already refunded that transaction I believe.
If she chooses to neg you leave a follow up comment stating why she negged you and keep it to the facts , people will read that if they are looking at your feedback that closely and judge for themselves.2 angels in heaven :A0 -
Ok now i have received the item back today, i checked it over and the 'damage' or broken thread is actually the start of the crochet yarn section not a broken thread and it smells of cigarette smoke.
Anyway regarding the refund how do i do that and will it cover outward postage and item cost as that is what she paid originally?
Advice is appreciated from anyone who can help.0
