How about volunteering for the National Trust, if there is a property local to her? My Mum does this and loves it, she meets loads of people (other volunteers and visitors to the property) and the place she volunteers at even organises lunches and day trips for the volunteers to go on.Marsh Samphire0

I have a little while to go before retirement. I am studying a computer qualification to allow me to run a little business building and repairing computers. It`s something I have always wanted to do and if it earns me a bit more than our pensions then that`s splendid.0

How about Homestart. Volunteers visit families and offer support and friendship.:footie:0

I tried our local U3A and there was nobody under 80. I have nothing against 80+ year olds but I was looking to meet like minded people of my own age. That said they were a lively bunch and had far more energy than I have but they did try to mother me.
If you are interested in voluntary work have a look at this website:

Thanks for all the messages! Lots to look into. She already does dancing and walking. She's quite keen to try bowling. There is a craft type group aswell that I might be able to persuade her to try. I really think she'd enjoy voluntary work, so I might try and find something along those lines aswell. I really want her to make new friends aswell that she can have lunch and coffee with and go to the theatre with. Hopefully she will. Thanks again! And anymore suggestions, keep them coming.Though no one can go back and make a brand new start, anyone can start from now and make a brand new ending0

I think volunteering would be a great idea. Charity shops are always looking for volunteers and she could get first pick of any bargains. The hospices also like volunteers to do things like ironing and fund raising.
I retire in 6 years, though I have a job in which I can continue working, but I like being at home. I have been single for 13 years and somewhere along the line I have stopped feeling lonely, look forward to an evening off, in on my own, as I can choose whatever I want to eat and to do whatever I like. My family visit regularly and I visit them too.
I'm sure your mum will come to enjoy the slower pace and the fact that she can be selective about what she does and doesn't do.
I hope she enjoys her retirement.0 -
I retire in 3 weeks after 34 years in the Health Service. There are lots of volunteering opportunities out there. A great way to meet new people. Im a volunteer meeter and greeter at the local hospital.0

What age are you when you become old and stop having plans for the future.
Let me explain, I am 56yrs old, My friend who works with me is 59, Now she is talking about retiring and just as she says do nothing just taking it easy, Now I still have a few things I want to do while I am still fit.
Would love to have a small B&B,
At the moment I work 39hrs, as well as a couple of cleaning jobs.Have been thinking of a small cleaning business as well.
She works 20hrs a week,
She thinks I have left it to late to do the things I want.

Too true Errata, grab life with both hands and have a go at things that interest you.
Personally, can't wait to retire. My problem will be how to fit everything I want to do in! I know my income will be reduced - but I will not have the stresses and strains of my job.
So, having taken some tips from here, I have expanded my horizons and take advantage of the 'offers' regarding travelodege et al, thetrainline and national express buses, food & restaurant offers and have seen more of the country in the last 3 years than ever before. I hope to continue in this mode for as long as I can.;)[STRIKE]Fed up of being kippered by kids - new resolve - the NO word. Still at this[/STRIKE] Dam they struck again!!
Stay focused on the bigger plan - :rolleyes:0
