council tax

Hi guys

Not sure if this is correct section.

I am single and get 25% single occupancy for my council tax.

My eldest son is 19 and council have taken away my 25% discount.

Is this correct, as he is my son not my partner.

Thanks

Judy

There is now 2 adults in the household so you are no longer entitled to single person discount.

The 25% discount is for living alone.

If your adult son is living with you, you will not be entitled to it.

The 25% discount is a single adult discount but you dont have to live alone to be eligable, anyone under 18 dosnt count and when I claimed a CT band reduction due to disability the LA did mention that in some circumstances another adult who is the disabled persons carer can be ignored for CT purposes but I didnt seek any further information because it isnt relevant in my case.

You need as much information as possible to give someone accurate advice. Asking a question is not the same thing as making a point.

Yes but regardless of what the son does, she isn't going to get a discount because there are 2 adults living there.......thats what I mean.....and it matters not one iota what the son does.....

If the 19 year old is a full time student then he doesn't count as an adult for calculating council tax and the single adult discount will still be applicable. This illustrates how important it is to get all the information before attempting to answer a question.

Whether you emphasise things in bold or not, your reply is not totally accurate as it matters very much whether he's in education or not!

There are certain disregards which could still apply and give a 25% discount so when the initial question was posed as to what the son does then it was asked correctly. Now it has been established he's on JSA then the OP would need to look down the Council Tax Benefit/ Second Adult Rebate route.

What was he doing prior to the discount being removed ?, was he a F/T student ?
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.
