There is no charge to receive texts wherever you are, UK or abroad. But if she texts next door in the hotel (or home) it will cost her 50p for either, because it's classed as a roaming text
Just tell her to shout through the wall-much cheaper!

Receiving texts is always free, but sending will not use inclusive messages and will cost Orange's roaming rates, wherever the destination phone is - unless you work around that and use something like Fishtext instead.

It looks like local calls are equivalent of about 5 pence a minute, and sms about 3p, and you might get SIMs for only a couple of quid each. Note the international rates to UK are more like 40 or 60p though

Some countries won't like license-free radios, and the frequency bands they use aren't necessarily available everywhere, so they might cause interference to other services.

I don't know about Egypt, so it would be worth checking, but in any case don't wave them about in public too much
