Bt-i plate

Hi Folks....I was wondering why Bt charge £11.74 including vat for this I plate thingy. According to them it will increase your broadband speed by up to 1.5Mbps** also cuts interference...well are they not committed to giving the best speeds possible if you have one of their packages? so should this not be FREE instead of being an optional EXTRA

You don't need it. Just disconnect your bell wire, that is all the i-plate does.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

For anyone who wants to try this, remove the wire from terminal-3 from the removable front plate on your main linebox and see if that makes a difference. The only problem that could happen is that some phones on any extension sockets may not ring, but this only tends to happen with quite old phones that need the ring wire.

Or remove the front plate and plug into the test socket (like this). I've had mine like that for years. Just put a plant pot in front of it if it's ugly :D

Still make sure you use your microfilter however. Using the test socket is a good way to check what your phone line is really like.

Test your speed before and after for a couple of days: http://www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk/

The I Plate is designed to remove the effect of problems with your own internal wiring for which you are responsible, which is why it is chargeable. The alternative is for you to imparove the wirng yourself or pay someone to do it for you.
As mentioned, you can remove the bell wire, although many people would be unhappy at doing this.

The Iplate is rubbish, as advised before remove the bell wire and if you want a filtered socket that really works install one of these !

Doing this will disconnect any extensions you may have as they are wired to the back of the faceplate.
If you don't have any extensions it won't make any difference.
A neater solution is to replace the faceplate with an ADSL faceplate like this one to, which is similar in price to a BT iPlate and a lot more use.

That gum you like is coming back in style.

The ultimate solution is to have your internal wiring severely shortened so that it enters your property, hopefully into a cupboard or other space, filtered master socket>dec phone base>wireless router.

Of course you might have to get openreach to do this.

Overhead lines are more prone to line noise.

Best to have no external extensions from the main box. I do have extensions but it's via a doubler on the microfilter.

Get the ADSL sorted, then add things externally outside the box and pass the microfilter. Removes all possible problems from your ADSL.
