Is it also true that you gotta change your mattress every 10 years? I have had mine about that time, it was a fairly expensive (for me!) IKEA one and it is great, still nice and good, got summer side and winter side, and we turn it regularly.

Why should I change it? Is this the same commercial principle of giving us a dishwasher tablet (but we can use half and it works just as well) to make us consume more, or is there a foundation in it?

Every morning I throw the covers off the bed and open the window and air the bedding and mattress - I read somewhere that it keeps mites down as all the dampness of our night sweat evaporates *eurgh* :o

Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).

personally i think thats just a ploy to make us buy a new one every so often. bit like thicker and thicker loft insulation. when you look into it, its the first couple of inches of insulation that help, the amount reduced by anything else is minimal. :o

Gosh, I hadn't thought that some mattresses were designed not to be turned regularly, sorry (will check mine too!)

I've heard about the ten years lark, personally don't believe it, but I DO know how good a new mattress feels.

When I went to buy my new bed a couple of years ago, I was informed by the man in the shop that you should buy the most expensive/best mattress you can afford and that a good quality one will last far more than 10 years. (He was an independant retailer, not one of those big stores)

My last bed was 17 years old when we upgraded to a superking size, and the old one still does sterling work as a spare - overheard my last guests commenting on how comfy it was compared to theirs :D

Trouble is, it says to turn the mattress every 3 months, but it weighs a ton (and a half!!) Good job Mr TM is of the large and strong variety of husbands ;D It still takes both of us though.

I have also seen base valances that are not designed to cover the whole base - they just tuck in a few inches under the mattress so you don't need to fight when you've washed them. Unfortunately, can't remember where, but you can keep a look out now you know they're available.

I read the instructions on a dorlux no turn mattress. In fact it said in small print that the mattress needs to be turned regulary…..luckily I did not bother paying the extra money for it!
