I'd be more inclined to use Linux for torrents, but I'm sure I'll soon be put straight as we have some really good techies on here.

Why... it makes no difference what OS you use - they can still see you connected!

I suppose you could use Tor for your downloads...

... And the Tor community won't thank you for swamping the service with P2P traffic!

In some P2P clients (such as Azureus), you can configure just the tracker to be retrieved via Tor, and connect directly to the peers, which is considered acceptable.

I was referring to the junk that would affect Windows and Tor would hide your IP. Follow esuhl's point about configuring the tracker in what's now called Vuze I believe.
Peel back your baby's eyelid to find no nationality or religious identity mark there. Peer at your baby's eyes for them to reflect back just people-throw away your flags and religious symbols...

Err... not quite sure what you mean. Are you saying that Tor nodes may be untrustworthy, or that peers may be untrustworthy?

Any decent organisation should publish an MD5 (or other) checksum on their website so that you can verify that the torrent hasn't been tampered with. Of course, any organisation that doesn't intend for their software to be distributed in such a manner is unlikely to provide such a checksum! Just discard that wooden leg and parrot and get acquainted with Tux!

It's a scam. Try not to worry too much about it, it takes a court judge to give you a fine not some email. Ignore it completely, pay nothing til you at least hear about it from a court summons.

  • Sounds like a scam...

All a company can do is find out what your external (i.e. one connected to the internet by your router) IP address is. Using this they can find out who the ISP is. If you've then got multiple clients connected (i.e. laptops) then they'll all have an internal IP address (which will be private to your network at home) but all display the SAME EXTERNAL IP ADDRESS.

Then they write to the ISP, who can find out who was using that IP address at the time in question. (Usually you get a different one each time you connect, unless you speficially wanted a static ip address). The ISP then usually forward the letter on to you but ARE'NT ALLOWED TO TELL THE PERSON WHO YOU ARE WITHOUT A COURT ORDER.

I've had two letters 'warning' me. Just ignore or if you're bothered email your ISP to see if it came from them.

If you are torrenting you should disable DHT. It makes you harder to trace apparently. Also only use private trackers!
  • If memory serves did not the letter on watchdog come from a solicitor not a company and it was the same london firm the bbc used them self .

Yea I think you're right actually. But the solicitor was acting on behalf of the company. Not sure if that's implied in the OP though.
