Check if the cookeen (& lard) contains hydrogenated vegetable oils. These are reputed to be very bad for you.
I am no pastry expert but I only make it with butter & it seems to work well.
    Nice to save.

Lard should not contain veg oils at all because it is made of pig fat. The last time i bought lard, for making soap, was in the co-op.
From what I know about pastry, the pastry is crisper if you use lard or suet, than if you use butter or marg.

    I have done reading too!

I've tried that old make double for the freezer trick but the gannets just eat double - still waiting for some to be allowed to get luke warm leat alone frozen :D

I use a really basic recipe from the Dairy Book of Homecookery which is out of print now but you can still pick it up in discount bookshops - really good to non fancy everyday food.

I got this recipe book when I first got married and it has been the most used recipe book in our house. I'm sure I got it from the milkman? Mine is battered and bruised and my mum says it looks like its full of germs :-/

I've been looking for a new/updated one for ages - now I know why I cant find one :(

COOKEEN - Oh my goodness. Took me back to being a little girl. My Nan always used Cookeen - swore by it. didn't know it still existed. And her pastry was always fanbloodytastic ;D I'm a veggie now so wont use it but it always makes me smile ;D
Sometimes it's important to work for that pot of gold...But other times it's essential to take time off and to make sure that your most important decision in the day simply consists of choosing which color to slide down on the rainbow...
