Sorry, this is probably a REALLy stupid question, but what is the main difference between a mixer, and a thermostatic mixer shower? And is it worth paying £100 more for a thermostatic one ?

The difference is that a good quality thermostatic will prevent you getting scalded as the thermostat inside the shower should keep the water at a constant temp, i.e whilst showering if the cold should stop coming through, the thermostat should respond fairly quickly and the shower should stop, if it was a straight forward mixer and the cold stops running the hot would keep going and it could be fairly uncomfortable. If you have children or elderly in the house a thermostatic is the way to go - not sure if thats explained it well enough. hope you know what I mean. For example nursing homes, swimming pools, schools etc it has to be a thermostatic for safe temperature control

A thermostatic mixer will maintain the set temperature, if someone turns a tap on or flushes a loo and the water pressure changes there should be no change in the shower temperature, with an ordinary mixer the temperature can be affected by water pressure changes so the water can suddenly go hot or colder.

I would always go for a thermostatic mixer much better and safer.

Combi is a halstead quattro gold, its on the list for replacement, but more pressing issues at moment (aren't there always ?)

Hi...your current boiler has a decent flow rate (hot water) at 12.3 litres/min. and you would be okay with a handset shower head on a slide rail eg Mira Element , 5 year warranty, compact thermostatic mixer, available as with an exposed or built-in valve.

i have a showerhead that can be put into various positions and it does have silicon wipe nozzles. The head also turn to make differnt spray patters, jet choices.

They do clog up. The head does get hard to turn and wiping the silicon only marginally helps. I live in London
