Where can we eat cheaply in North Wales & Anglesey?

Help

We have a holiday home on the island of Anglesey, North Wales but we cannot find anywhere cheap and good to eat. There is a Wetherspoons in Bangor which is pretty good but we're bored with the choices now.

We used to go to the Antelope just over the Menai Bridge on the mainland but it went really smelly and unreliable in quality last year. There used to be a Brewers Fayre at Parc Britannia but that's owned by someone else now and quite expensive. There are two Brewers Fayre pubs in Llandudno but it's quite a way to go unless passing or visit Llandudno anyway.

On the island of Anglesey itself the Victoria Hotel in Menai Bridge is reasonable with big helpings but there are only about 15 tables and it soon fills up! We tried an SA Brains pub in Llangefni which was recommended on this site but my husband wanted something from the cheaper menu and I wanted something from the standard restaurant menu and they wanted us to sit in separate rooms!!!

Please, please, please, can someone recommend somewhere new for us?

I was a student in Bangor from '04-'07, we used to go to The Harp pub for lunch, it's at the Bangor Wetherspoons' end of the high street. That's really the only place I can think of that might do slightly higher-end food that's not too pricey.
And Fat Cats, that's nice but might be a little expensive if you're used to Wetherspoons' prices, that's along the Wetherspoons' end of the high street but more towards the centre of town, from memory I think it's near an Army and Navy-style store, there's also one in Llandudno.
We also used to go to Mike's Bites in upper-Bangor, near the Belle Vue pub which is brilliant for cooked breakfasts at any time of day, they also do sandwiches and jacket potatoes etc too.
Hope this helps, though there may be new stuff/stuff closed since I was there last...
:D**Thanks to everyone on here for hints, tips and advice!**:D

Ah I remember every one of those places mentioned so far!

I'm not sure if it's been mentioned, but over the Menai bridge on the left hand side is a hotel that does lovely food, not sure of it's name though. Not sure if it's the Victoria but it's lovely! I had garlic chicken and would definitely go back.

The bar The Menai in upper Bangor is quite nice, a varied menu and quite reasonably priced. Never in a year did I go to Wetherspoons, we always went to Yates' or Varsity, cheap and always filling.

Oh and I had exactly the same opinion of the Antelope! Bewers Fayre was nice though!
  • SUCCESS!! We have just been for lunch to a wonderful pub on Anglesey and would recommend it to anyone. It is the Bull Inn, Pentraeth Road, Pentraeth (on the outskirts of Pentraeth village, on the road to Benllech). They do two main meals for £10, an excellent carvery for £5.50, and an a la carte menu too. We had the carvery and my hubby who hates "Sunday dinners" absolutely loved it, which is quite a recommendation. I believe meals are available until 9pm. The Sunday carvery is £7.50. Give it a try - it's an independent pub, so the more people who go there the better. Well done to the owner, we say:-)
  • Theres also Table Table, used to be a brewers fayre, at Parc menai, they do 2 meals for £9 week days before 6.30pm but there not badly priced anytime.

Thanks for this extra tip. We went to Parc Menai just after it ceased to be a Brewers Fayre and were shocked at the total bill. We never went back.

Thanks to you, we shall give it another chance - 2 meals for £9 is about right for us:D
  • I don't know if anyone is still monitoring posts on this thread, but we went to the Antelope pub, just over the Menai Bridge on the mainland side. It had changed hands since we last went, hade lots of offers on, good food, discount cards for families and over 50's, and had been refurbished and redecorated. A great improvement. If you are anywhere near Holyhead, then I would recommend the Valley Hotel.

I, my sister and brother-in-law ate there a couple of weeks ago and it was lovely. Home cooked meals and 3 specials boards to choose from if the menu didn't appeal. I'd recommend a portion of onion rings, but to share - you'll never finish them all yourself!!!

I also like the Jade Village Chinese restaurant in Menai Bridge.

  • Thanks for those recommendations. I'll bear the Valley Hotel in mind next time we're in Holyhead. I think we tried a lunchtime menu at the Jade Village (is it the one near the Co-op?), but they brought the food in little bowls and freaked out when we asked for plates. They did eventually bring the plates but they were the size of side plates! We're too messy to eat in small crockery;) Regards, Kaye

We have been a few times to the Gazelle which is just outside of Beaumaris, haven't been for a few years now but every time we've been it's been lovely food and good value for money. xx
